Inspiration

Inspiration is a D&D mechanic which allows the DM to reward good role play, creative thinking, or more generally any sort of action they find impressive with the ability to re-roll a D20 at some point in the future. I personally think this is great mechanic, but I often forget it exists when in the middle of running a narrative and I often miss the opportunity to award players in the moment. To help ensure we are using inspiration to its full capacity, I use the following house rules:   1. Players should not ask for an inspiration, but at any time, a player can nominate another player for inspiration, and I as the DM will then decide if inspiration should be awarded based on the situation. 2. Players may only have 1 inspiration at a time, with the exception of players taking on a player role (Player Roles), who may gain one inspiration in addition to their initial inspiration at the start of session. But once the initial inspiration is expended, the player may only have 1 inspiration at a time. 3. At the end of a session, I will give an opportunity for the players to vote and award 1 inspiration point to someone for a noteworthy event during the session. This is entirely in control of the players, and I as the DM cannot veto the decision, or partake in the vote (although I might make reccomendations or nominations). The chosen player will then begin the next session with inspiration. 4. If a player is awarded inspiration and they already have an inspiration point, they can choose to give their inspiration to another player.   As far as the narrative description of inspiration, I consider it as a reflection of the character's exceptional skill and perseverance as heroes, often managing to succeed where most other would fail.
