Fetchers

In the days of old, small communities would designate particularly skilled individuals as Fetchers. These Fetchers were tasked with the retrieval of deserters from the community in question. Originally a core profession within most early communities, it later became illegal due to the complications involving the growing communities and societies. As the people became more civilized, it became a crime against freedom. However, the practice is still alive and well in communities that exist in harsher environments, every member having an important role.   Fetchers were often skilled trackers, hunters and fighters. Although the policy was generally to bring the deserter(s) back alive, there were cases where a kill order was requested instead. Many Fetchers had moral codes they stuck to, but some could be swayed by coin or favour. Typically avoiding killing their 'parcels', Fetchers were preferred by smaller communities who could not afford to lose members. These days, however, they operate so far outside the law that it is often considered a mercy if the parcel is returned in one piece. It should be noted however, that not all Fetchers know they serve a profession so old, often simply referring to themselves as 'rescuers'. Morality has a complex relationship with the profession.   Alternatively, Fetchers were often hired to find lost children or livestock - especially when they had wandered into dangerous territory. The profession remains popular, but since becoming illegal has exchanged public popularity for a more black market approach. Working alongside assassins, thieves and the like. Once a noble profession, now little more than a business for hunter-turned-thugs.
