Vramcharp

Geography

The planet is covered in every possible variety of wetland - there are bogs and marshes, fens and swamps. There are occasional anomalies, such as archipelagos of solid earth that are inhabited by barbarous peoples, sinister lakes of burbling sulfuric acid, and the famed and coveted scrap-fields of Oikumenean technology. Swamps are very common around the equatorial tropics, where jungles of mangrove trees take root in the mud, and great mats of mossy matter creates immense islands comprised entirely from assorted plant matter, while the poles are, as you would expect, covered by groaning glaciers and ice shelves, vestiges from a time when Vramcharp was once covered in snow and humanity spent millions of years playing the roles of savage hunters. The sluggishly slow water currents bring the melting glaciers south, but some of them are quick enough that some lucky observes have noticed sights like sublimating icebergs in the tropics spewing forth sizzling steam. Because of the previous ice age concluding there has been a permanent overcast for the past several millennia, and the skies are always covered in dense grey clouds and the daylight, regardless of season, is always dim. So long has it remained so that it is commonly disputed whether there is actually a sun, nonetheless three.

Fauna & Flora

Planet Vramcharp is home to many creatures which are predominantly reptilian, insectoid, avian or amphibian. The majority of mammalian creatures on this swampy planet are either distant kin to humans or just rare. Mankind isolates itself from the ecosystem at large in their titanic city-ships wrought of their invincible grey metal - but the same could not be said from their cousins living on many rough-and-tumble island colonies. Much like Australia, a significant proportion of organisms on Vramcharp are pernicious towards humans and other sapient species at large.

Natural Resources

All water on Vramcharp is stagnant and fetid, which is why humans rely on ancient salvaged technology which nobody knows how to construct or repair to make the water safe to drink, such as the Oikumenean purificators. Humans have taken millions of years to adapt to the horrid climate and pathogens of the planet and yet life on the city-ships has once again made them subsceptible to the Vramcharp's innumerable inimical animalcules. Though there is no brine, all water on this planet is considered a serious biohazard unless thoroughly purified.   Humans use machines powered by combustion engines fueled by peat and coal, the former of which originates from peat bogs scattered around the planet. The latter originates from a handful of dangerous island colonies. Demand for energy is rising as technologies are salvaged, reverse-engineered, or in some cases invented.   Most of their metals originate from towering islands of slimy orange bog iron, which are toxic and rusty. Sprawling mats of fossilized bacteria are carved to create religious icons. There is no need for masonry, for everything has been built for them, and they are re-discovering the techniques for making cement and concrete.   Every city-ship has agreed to maintain colonies on Rice Island, where the majority of their provender is grown. There is a steady output of wool and grain and hides and lime. But even the marshes can be exploited. Occasionally the humans of the city-ships will send forth a fleet of small, sturdy boats crewed by hardened frontiersmen to extract a quota of resources, and slay monsters and dismantle them for bones, hide and meat.
