Session 20: The Journey South
General Summary
Grumm the Brute revealed to the group his desire to stay in Solara (Capital) and oversee the building of the group's new headquarters and the (hopeful) training of a griffon mount. Luckily, the group's number would not be down for too long, as they quickly met Rolen Sha-tae, an darkly tanned wood elf full of bright-eyed optimism, while on a shopping excursion in town. His personal journey also drew him southward, so after proving his loyalty (via a footrace?), he joined the group -- alongside some hired priests -- as an escort for the magically-bound prisoner.
Over the first week of the two week journey, the caravan picked up signs of cultist activity in the area -- leftover remains of bloody rituals of various kinds. The air itself felt off; there was no breeze and a distant lingering stench hung in the air.
It wasn't until their seventh night that the group made upon the cultists in the act; during the witching hour in the middle of the night, the party watched as a group of cultists sacrificed a bound halfling in the midst of an arcane circle drawn into the ground. A fight ensued, and though the cultists were dispatched quickly, the party was unable to save the halfling or prevent the summoning ritual. In a flash of light, a powerful marilith stepped through a doorway to the Abyss, slithering wildly at the party, scimitars held aloft in each of her six arms. She proved a powerful foe -- even more powerful after summoning a murder of vrocks -- but was ultimately laid waste by the party in one desparate final attack. They escaped mostly unscathed, at least of any permanent damage, but quickly realized their jaunt south would not be quite the journey they expected.
