Yoxchopan Empire

The Yoxchopan Empire was once an ancient and powerful elven empire. Now it is little more than a large kingdom, though its people still cling to the old name as well as to the dream of one day reclaiming their lost power.

History

Ages ago, a tribe of high elves came to the shores of a great lake. They named it Zapotala, which means blue forever, and settled upon its shores. (Other nations called it Roaring Lake .) Their new land was abundant in resources: the forests were filled with mighty trees and plentiful game, the grasslands had rich soil and ample rain, and the lake teemed with fat, slow-moving fish. The elves called the land Yoxchopā - peaceful bounty - and the settlement they built along a bay, Itatlan, soon became a city.   In time the elves explored the shores of Zapotala, and discovered the dwarves of the Zangaman Excavation, with whom they began to trade. All along the lake elven colonies sprang up - Tlalli, Tlaloc, and Cotzui grew fastest. For 75 generations the burgeoning empire grew and expanded.   But then a magical catastrophe shook the nearby Golden Empire, ravaging and destroying the majority of its lands. Its starving people fled, and many who went west came to the fertile lands of Yoxchopā. This massive influx of migrants overwhelmed the native elves, and the resulting instability - combined with new, imported diseases - led to political crisis after crisis.   Following a series of rebellions and military defeats, the Yoxchopans only controlled the eastern shore of the Zapotala. A thousand years has passed since that tumultuous time, which is but a short time in the history of the elves. While other peoples view these events as in the distant past, for the Yoxchopan the wounds are still fresh.   And as they say, "An elf never forgets."
