Rhugavian sahuagin

Tritonia has long portrayed the sahuagin as little more than violent, savage barbarians.   In the case of the Rhugavian sahuagin, this stereotype is fairly accurate.

Culture

Shared customary codes and values

Honor your elders, for their age proves their strength, and that they did not eat you when you were young proves their wisdom.   Every day, be stronger, faster, smarter than the day before.   Honor is useless. Nothing is worth sacrifice. If you die to save another, your strength is lost and their weakness preserved.   You are either a predator or prey. If you are a predator, do not overhunt. If you are prey, outsmart your predators.   Do not consume the triton. You will inherit their weaknesses.

Art & Architecture

The Rhugavians spend little time on art, for two primary reasons.   Their first relates to their ideals of usefulness and functionality. A beautiful thing is a useful thing. The more useful a thing is, the more beautiful. A spear is therefore considered one of the most beautiful objects, as it can be used to attack, defend, cut, stab, throw, hunt, lever objects, and so on and so forth. A particularly beautiful spear would be one which can do all of those things well. Carvings, sculptures, and mosaics are only useful insofar as they are part of walls, pillars, or floors, and inornate versions of those structures are considered to do their jobs better, and are thus more beautiful.   The second reason Rhugavians care little for art, and why some actively hate it, is that it is a powerful reminder of the excesses of their conquerors and oppressors, the tritons of Tritonis. The tritons cover every surface, no matter how banal, with decoration of one sort or another. Useless and insulting, no self-respecting sahuagin should seek to emulate this disgusting behavior.

Common Customs, traditions and rituals

The Rhugavians live in communities of no more than a couple thousand loosely-connected family groups, forming well-defended, fortified towns, usually within rock walls. These defenses are vital, as one of the most vital Rhugavian traditions is the krahd, or ritualized battle. Two towns will agree to send warbands against each other in a pitched battle. However, they usually keep their best warriors behind, so that in case of defeat, the town won't be at the mercy of the victors. Rhugavian history is replete with examples of towns consumed in a blood frenzy by the victors of a krahd.

Ideals

Relationship Ideals

Rhugavians believe that close attachment leads to complacency. The individual is more important than the group, and one should always be striving for individual improvement. Romantic relationships are considered to be delusions of the soft-skinned races, and are most associated with the hated tritons. Amongst one's peers, one should ensure they know your full worth, and you theirs, for mutual advancement.
