Venali Roseshade

Champion of Nature, Chosen of Ves Venali Roseshade

Background

The forest of Illvandrin was light up as bright as day, although the sun had set many hours before. The two moons the red Shards of Olmar and the white gold luster of Tres were high in the night sky and shone down in all their full beauty. A rare occurrence that the wood elves of Illvandrin watched with great care.   To be born under the watchful vistage of both moons was to be a great blessing, and curse. Taken before even suckling at their mothers teat the few born while both moons shown down upon them were whisked away deep into the heart of the forest. It was known by all that to bare child in this time, was to give them over to the heart of nature it's self, and seldom did those mothers who head such a chance refuse.   So it was with Venali Roseshade taken after his first lungful of air and soon deposited in the heart of the wonderwood grove. An academy built into the trees of the forest heart itself. Ancient in its own right, said to have been in existence before the great waters receded when Illvandrin was still an island the academy held few teachers, and even fewer students. For the next one hundred and twenty five years Venali was taught. Histories, Martial Arts, Crafting, Building, Singing, Medicine, and much more.   Venali was, too his teachers disappointment rather average. Unlike the other few children born under the dual moons who had great strength, or endurance, or were nimble as the wind... Venali was rather, ordinary. He did his best to keep the thoughts of being "less" and a "fraud" out of his mind but, despite his best efforts was unable to fully resist the urge to give into self pity at times.   As the Great Hunt approached Venali became more and more desperate to find a way to distinguish himself too the spirit of the great forest. It was in the last fifteen years that he began his nightly ritual. Each night, before meditation Venali would recite a simple prayer, on taught to him by his first tutor Aberath Thornfoot.
By moon lit night, in humble stance. I come before and ask this chance. Please bless me now, so I might prove. Your holy power to those you choose.
It was often followed by a significant amount of specific requests. Assistance with a particular are of study, help recalling an obscure historical detail, or the easing of his own aches and pains. Within a short time Venali felt that truly not much was coming of his new nightly ritual but something about dedicating to time to think through his troubles for the day seemed to ease his stress. As a result, the prayer soon became habit, and was performed every night for the next fifteen years.   Upon the night of the Great Hunt many rituals of clensing and fast had been completed and the seven students who had spent the last 125 years preparing stood upon raised white stone steps facing into the forests heart. Alden Oakheart, Gina Greenleaf, Ritilic Brightpillar... all names Venali associated with great strength, feats of magic, and overpowering charisma "respectively". While instructed to clear his mind, Venali instead went back to those thoughts of his youth of being just not quite good enough and wondering exactly what time it was when he had been pulled from the womb.   To calm his thoughts he recited his prayer and as the high priest lifted a spoon to his lips with a brackish liquid inside Venali felt it slip past his tongue and soon the hunt began.   After two months Venali found himself still alive. Not all of the seven could say the same. Greenleaf was slain in her sleep, some wispy shade drank the life from her before the others realized there was even an intruder within the camp. A few angry words were barbed his way, as he was the one on watch. Brightpillar attempted to jump a gorge and despite Venali's best efforts he was unable to pull him up by the rope they had attached to his waist before the rope frayed.   And so it went for four more months. Each month another of the chosen slipping through his fingers, unable to stop the bleeding fast enough, or watching as the incorrectly flipped leaver sent a stone slab to slowly crush Oakheart. Venali after nearly two years, found himself alone on the quest. His misery and failure haunting him at every step. Venali struggled to find the next clue everything a quagmire and undiscoverable maze as the voices and visages of his fallen companions haunted him. Trying to recall later Venali couldn't put a number on exactly how many weeks, days, or years he spent on the ethereal quest that had no final objective but the last part.. that was as clear as the present was too him.    He could see both her humanoid form and that of a multi-headed green dragon super imposed over it at the same time. She walked with an elegant power and with a smile she reached out both her clawed, and human hand at the same time and said:
All that have defiled nature will weep and despair, for my champion will come forth and cull them like the leaves of fall. Their bodies shall be piled as the grasses before the wind. None shall encroach upon my domain for his hand will be swift and his strikes sure. Are you that champion?
A spark of hope burned inside his chest, an endorsement from a God "the" God if his suspicions were correct. Perhaps just the weight of what had happened would be enough to spur him into greater things, become more than the mediocrity that had claimed his life after birth. With slight trepidation due to his continued self doubt Venali reached out and with a voice far less sure than he had hoped it was, said "Yes".   He spent the next three weeks explaining everything that had happened to the elder council. The other six students still alive did the same each their own quest and faults laid bare during the Great Hunt but none with the experience Venali had. It was deemed much to the chagrin and confusion of both the other students, and tutors that Venali had been chosen as a champion by Ves, God of Nature and in short order he was presented the title and station her champion would afford.     The months passed and Venali felt absolutely no different than before. Constantly waiting each night he felt some small divine gifts but none more powerful than the other students had been blessed with as druids. He wore his green and gold trimmed robes and now more than ever felt like the worlds greatest sham. Had he remembered correctly? Did she really ask if HE wanted to be her champion or had she just said she did need a champion? Perhaps he was suppose to take that message to one of the other students and he had stolen their station.    It was bad enough when he was thinking those dark thoughts but soon he heard the whispers amongst the others. Unable to handle the self doubt and constnat feeling of not being good enough he made a plan.    Speaking to a few of the more gosip inclined members of his order Venali made it clear that he had been given a divine mandate and must set out into the greater world to solve a problem that only the Champion of Ves could. With little preparation, least his resolve fail Venali escaped into the night in the form of a rabbit making his way quickly through the underbrush towards the north west.    And so, as if prey to his self doubt and unease still haunted by his inadequacies The Champion of Nature, Chosen of Ves, Moonborn Hero ran in the literal form of a rabbit into the world beyond the forest.
