Null Badger
Finding ways to combat magic users has become quite the problem in Tavadea. Finding ways to limit magic use are even nullify it in order to deal with criminal mages has become a necessary thing. While employing mages to combat mages seemed the best way to do it, the discovery of the Null Badge gave none magic users a way to fight back against mages.
The Null Badger Is the size of large dog and has the unique ability to nullify any magic within a certain range. This is an innate ability that the badges have no control over and has a limited range of only a 2-5 feet. While this limited range may seem useless, anybody within the range is completely protected from any magic, and a mage within this range is completely unable to cast any spells.
Several organizations of mage hunters utilize Null Badgers in their hunts. Larger cities utilize the animals in their city guards to protect their citizens. There are several breeding programs designed to breed badges with a much larger range that their nullifying effect will work. City guards with their Null Badger partners are a common site and the animals are well cared for. Several jails for mages have also been built, filled with enough Null Badgers and other magic nullifiers to guarantee no mage can find a magical means of escape. Noble have started using Null Badgers to protect their wealth, and a new breed of more aggressive badgers is starting to become popular, taking the place of traditional guard dogs.
Null Badgers were original discovered by humans, human mages being some of the more destructive leading to a much greater need amongst humans to find away to control these dangerous magic users. Other races of Tavadea have started adopting Null Badgers into cultures for the much the same reason as humans, to protect themselves from dangerous human mages. The Vodnik, the Tavadean race with a high level of magic users, dislike Null Badgers. For the Vodnik using magic is akin to breathing and they find the nullifying effect the badgers produce frightening and debilitating. While Fauns don't keep the animals as pets themselves, Null Badgers being much to big for the small Fauns to handle, they do like the creatures and always befriend any they come across.
The great city of Ruimella is the only city where Null Badgers in the city guard get paid and have ranks. Controlled by the Tormelenes, who have a history of being kept as pets and slaves, they viewed the use of Null Badgers as exploitative The idea of paying the Null Badgers was proposed to work around this, all well as giving the badgers ranks and allowing them to work up in the hierarchy of the guard to appease the Tormelene royal family. This lead to one badge eventually achieving the rank of chief as was given his own office. Chief Rocky is much beloved by the citizens of Ruimella and his prescence at official events is considered to be good luck as well as the subtle nod to the City Guards continued approval and support of the royal family. It is also known that Princess Nune'e has called upon Chief Rocky as councilor upon occasion, another sign to the population of her growing madness. So far the results of Chief Rocky's advice to the princess has been the design of dress uniforms for the guard badgers. It is agreed by most that the badgers are adorable when appearing in these uniforms.
