Duke of Umoven Reinhard Peatvein (a.k.a. 'The Pitch King' 'Tarlord')

Thick grey hair spattered with the black of his youth dots the dwarf's face as he marches from his office in the Law Chambers back to the manor of his house hold across the city. People waved and smiled at their purposefully walking Duke and he waved and called back to them, his guards, a quartet of plate armored dwarves keeping their eyes on each person as they call out. The man flexed a bit, stretching the muscles in his back sore from sitting all day; his tight clothes creaked, an overcoat of dyed crocodile hide covered his fine woven cloth clothes and masked the smell and clanking of the mithril undershit he wore underneath. Eyes that were amber like the fires that burned off the peat his family mined took in his city, content in the happy faces he saw. 

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Reinhard is getting on in his years but he still has the tone of a mine worker. He has some deep gashes along his arms and face from his time in the mines and beneath his hair line there are old scars from when the mindflayer had grappled with him and attempted to devour his brains.

Body Features

He has a bit of a hefty paunch but it is mixed with layers of muscle giving his body the 'strong man' look.

Facial Features

He has a few shallow scars across his nose and one through his right eyebrow.

Identifying Characteristics

Beyond those listed here, Reinhard is usually noticeable by the ash grey hair with long uniform streaks of black that make up both his impressive beard and the well groomed hair of his head.

Personal history

Reinhard is the head of his family, having ascended to the position after the death of his mother in The Gem Wars, spending his early years working in their family's peat mines as a foreman and specialist he earned many nicknames from the dwarves who worked under him and competed against him.  He was a raucous youth, prone to overworking as many dwarves are, taking his time off work to party and drink and work at bettering his craft as much as he could manage between fulfilling his responsibilities. When his mother, the previous matron of the clan went to join the war efforts in Warden he took over the mine completely. With her death his ascension to the master of the clan became completed.    Wanting to continue providing for his family he broached many opportunities to the then Duke of Umoven; Ardriss of Keringal, the old human duke aided in many ways the growth of his family for the betterment of the realm, eventually giving to him the contract that would allow him to open their family's third mine in which they discovered a rich deposit of natural salt.    Shortly after the death of Ardriss, at the behest of his siblings and nephews/nieces he put his name forward for the position of Duke; his family having more than enough money and influence to build a strong running. The charismatic Clan Patron quickly overtook all other dwarven contenders for the position and his rivals, wanting to have a dwarf in control of the duchy, even from a rival home, fell into line behind him as it became clear that he was beginning to gain control of many of the human votes.

Reinhard for all intents and purposes identifies as a man.

Sexuality

No one is able to fully grasp Reinhard's sexuality and loath to any who attempt such a foolish endeavor.

Education

Reinhard is educated first and foremost as a Foreman. He trained under his uncles and cousins to become a leader of workers and skilled eye for mine work and craftsmanship. He developed in the first century of his life that keen eye for potentially unseen dangers, a fifth sense some dwarves developed that allowed them to know when a region they were in was dangerous or to pick up the potential danger of the Silent Killer (natural gases). As the fourth age was approaching war his mother began teaching him on the more political side of the family and thanks to his training managing people as a foreman it became clear that politics was just a step beyond this.

Employment

He worked in his family's mines until shortly into the fifth age when he decided to throw his hand into the ring of politics. Having served as a pick axe in the peat bogs, to foreman, to general manager of one of the entire mining operations until eventually succeeding his mother as the head of the clan.

Accomplishments & Achievements

The creation of the third Peatvein mine (Dubbed Sarla's Pit in memory of his mother), and the increased income to the realm with the discovery of the salt deposits therein has greatly boosted his popularity within the realm. He has created stronger ties to Couthshou who are always hungry for more fresh salt providing him with a key trading partner that shares a border with his land.

Failures & Embarrassments

Reinhard is a bit of a drunk, he likes his booze and he likes to gamble (though only out of his own pockets, there has never been an accusation of him dipping into public funds for his own vices). He has enough money with the three mines that are technically owned by him and his clan to feed his vices but it has occasionally caused some issues with travelling diplomats.

Mental Trauma

In his youth (around the time he was fifty-two), Reinhard was trapped in one of his mines when a Natural Gas explosion shifted the earth around him pouring some peat from the bog down into the tunnel. He was trapped with a group of five other miners. Together they worked to dig deeper into the tunnels eventually finding a natural cave system. Attempting to route their way through the caves the group came under attack from a mindflayer. A forward scout of a mindflayer community looking for new 'cattle', it turned some of the miners against each other and began to make them fight one another near to death; finally revealing itself. Breaking off their psionic intruder the group managed to kill the flayer but not before three of them fell. Reinhard managed to get himself and other one lone survivor out of the cave system before ordering the new tunnel they had made shut forcibly. Since then he has had a strong aversion to mind controlling magic and began making sure that druids, earth shapers and kabution crawlers work alongside his crews so that such cave-ins aren't so potentially lethal.

Intellectual Characteristics

Reinhard is incredibly charming and charismatic when sober usually understanding the best way to handle or interact with people if he's spent any time with them.

Morality & Philosophy

Above all else Reinhard believes in helping the community. Much to the chagrin to some of the elders of his clan he has taken a fair hand in politicking the realm and has shown nearly no favoritism towards his own house. Whether this is from a desire for him to maintain the peace or a general distaste for nepotism, or perhaps, just enjoyment in watching his relatives get annoyed it is unknown.

Primarily Reinhard is motivated to improve the standing of his hold and prevent the other duchies from interfering with their foreign affairs.

Reinhard is quite taken with rice-wine (sake) and always keeps an immaculate set of crocodile bone dice on him for gambling purposes.
