Republic of Lafaya
As a republic, Lafaya is ruled by an upper class known as the merchant princes. These merchant princes tend to have a significant economic capital themselves which is part of what makes them merchant princes, but most also have history with the city and it is there where the prince part comes in as they have through the years more and more become like nobility, with families being more and more important. There currently exists a group of five hundred merchant princes which takes part in Lafaya's councils. These princes either themselves show up for these meetings or use close family members or advisors to represent them. The council decides on everything and is the general decision maker in the city. The merchant princes that rule Lafaya are not exactly hidden but are often only known by merchant princes or those directly under that position. With most citizens having no idea which rich person is a prince and which is just a rich snob. The council of Lafaya also serves as the center of the Confederation of Cities activities with most meetings of the Confederation being in the council hall or some other building in Lafaya and those who represent Lafaya in these Confederation meetings are chosen by the council. The post as representative of Lafaya for the confederation is not always prestigious but can sometimes show which family is the most important as in certain events the one who represents Lafaya for the Confederation can decide how the confederation and through that, the whole of Tewez acts.
