Obrirun

In the Duergar occupation of the Dwarven lands of Obrirun a group of Dwarves met in the middle of the night for a common goal and with a common origin. They were all Dwarves who either had ancient claims to the local aristocracy or were an active member of it. And so hidden by the night warming themselves near a fire they made a deal, or forged a pact, to throw aside all petty internal quarrels and do whatever they can to resist and fight back this and any occupation, at any cost. This meeting is said to be the birth of the state of Obrirun and created what became known as 'The Firepact'.   When their resistance became successful and the Duergar finally fell back to consolidate their forces, these same Dwarves who had sworn to this Firepact declared themselves independent from Tefaran and carved out their own state. Proceeding a pretty calm war as the decimated Second Empire had none of the manpower, money or ability to fight the Dwarves they became independent and re established themselves as Obrirun. While originally a few centuries ago the land had been almost entirely Dwarven, over the years many other races had begun to populate the area as a result of the second empire, while many of the humans left as a result of the war (and a not too kind policy towards them.) Many of the Smallfolk and Gnomes who had moved in stayed and were treated with the same kindness as any Dwarf would have received.   However the Dwarves did never forget nor forgive those who had conquered them and even after their independence was secured their army never got reduced or fully disassembled and so even to this day military duty is common and considered honorable within Obrirun as this aristocratic republic continues to maintain their strong professional army which has served as an example for other states ever since. Their army is also where the common other name for the Dwarves have come forth, "The Firepact Dwarves." As to serve in the army means to take the Firepact, a small ritual where one swears undying loyalty to the protection and perseverance of Dwarves, Obrirun and its citizens. The Obrirun military is however very complex in structure with many different ranks and divisions and a large bureaucracy as well, but it has proven effective as it has (together with good fortifications) succeeded in keeping their home protected.
