Lantern Lighter

The Lantern Lighters, are those few on Tinobi with the talent to light and maintain the mage-lanterns mostly seen throughout the library and city of Sandstep. This becomes particularly important when all the clans of Tinobi gather for The Treatise. For the duration of The Treatise, the entire city is lit up by mage-fire, providing constant near-daylight for the duration. Purely ceremonial in nature, it is a gesture and symbol of good faith. Showcasing the understanding that when the clans gather, they do so under the light of the aether, and words whispered in the dark are not welcome during this time of collaboration.

Qualifications

The Lantern Lighters of Tinobi require the rare talent (on Tinobi) of arcane magic. While training is not typically required, one must merely prove they possess the ability to light the mage-lanterns of Sandstep.

Payment & Reimbursement

The Lantern Lighters receive a living wage, contingent on the size of the family they support. In order for a Lighter to receive the appropriate stipend, the application paperwork , made out to the Archivists of Sandstep, is lengthy and extensive. Lighters must provide proof of their last ten years of occupation and location, as well as birth records or marriage records proving relation. This is mostly due to an increase, seen about 10 years ago, of youthful migrants from mage-rich lands, moving to Sandstep City together, sharing a large house among ten strangers, and all applying for Lantern Lighter positions. This rorting of the system enabled ten individuals, previously unknown to one another, to each receive Lantern Lighter wages appropriate to support a family of ten. After the crackdown, some have argued the current process to obtain fair wage is difficult and unnecessary for those attempting to apply legitimately. The Archivists insist they're tweaking the process as necessary.
