Garret

Yugo Emori (a.k.a. Garret)

History

Nalys

Garret's upbringing is exactly the kind of story one would expect, after getting to know him. Perhaps stereotypically, Garret's youth was tumultuous and unfortunate. He never knew any real family. Growing up stealing for food and occasionally having the luxury of sneaking into a stable to sleep at night. There was no gruff bachelor that took him in when he noticed Garret's sticky fingers or grimy face, no lonely couple that took him as a substitute for a son. Although he ran with a small group of other undesirables, he formed no lasting bonds or friendships. Garret grew up grim, desperate, and alone.   Nearing adulthood, Garret was offered increasingly more dangerous jobs and duties. Garret's clientele were the elite of Nalys, eventually answering to the King and Queen themselves. It helped, when eventually Garret was discovered in Enthar on a job for the Nalysian Princess, that there was no record of his existence. Nothing could be traced back to those that had hired him in Nalys, although his origin is written across his features. Taking his opportunity mid-transport to one of the hidden prisons in the recesses of the Enthar countryside, Garret managed to escape and flee the continent. Unsure of his reception in Nalys, he fled to Almusia.

Lord Quinlon of Killaren

While not the first of Quinlon's household of miscreants, Garret was perhaps the one that brought them all together. While Garret would never say that he was desperate when he met Quin, becoming the head of the household Quinlon was keeping in the capital city of Estren certainly came at an opportune time. It provided a perfect cover for Garret to come up with a new identity, to disappear into Almusia, whilst also being able to keep tabs on the upper echelon of society and any throwbacks to his previous life. Being Quinlon's 'manservant' was an easy part to play. That Garret would come to enjoy the man's company, and in time, respect him, was never quite part of the plan.

Abilities

Magic

Garret is a shadowmage, of a much smaller calibre than Quinlon's younger brother Oren. His ability to manipulate shadow is only applicable in the immediate vicinity around his person, and able to be used to conceal himself. He doesn't possess Oren's fledgling ability to become shadow, although he would very much like to. Garret's connection with shadow allows him to deepen the dark around himself, reflect light away from where he stands, and soften the sounds of his presence whilst in artificially deepened shadow. The latter was something he was able to develop with Quinlon's assistance and understanding of sound.   Beyond his affinity for shadows, Garret has a small well of personal aether, and only a small ability to manipulate the aether of the world. He is able to do a small number of minor magics that aren't associated with darkness.

Assassin

The ability to creep and sneak in shadow greatly assists in his ability to kill. Skilled with blade and poison, Garret's skills lie in removing an enemy before they have a chance to react. An assassin, first and foremost, his primary skills are:
*Stealth
*Poisons
*Throwing blades

Personality

Reserved

While not shy, Garret is a quiet man, preferring to stick to the shadows, rather than drawing attention to himself. Although others may consider a man of his talents to be working in a position that is beneath him, cleaning Quin's shoes or preparing his clothes, it provides him the freedom and peace he requires at this point in time.

Survivor

Garret has very little he's willing to die for because he wants to live for something. Being a martyr only gets you dead, and Garret has no interest in that.

Dry

Garret has a dry, sarcastic sense of humour. Helpfully, his current employer doesn't mind that he speaks his mind. It's a refreshing change, considering the strict formality of his previous life.

Harsh

Although occasionally amused or amusing, Garret isn't a friendly person. He's exacting and harsh, often grim and rarely would he be considered sensitive or warm.

Intelligent

A strategist, Garret is constantly weighing up risk and reward. He's not a thrill-seeker, he's a realist, and sometimes the reward holds just enough weight to trump the risk.
