Ascension

Ascension is the name of the process that occurs when Avatars, also known in legend as "Angels", return to the Divine Realm after two decades on the Material Plane. Avatars, divine beings created and born in the realm of the Gods, spend their pre-maturity years among the Aeshir. They are placed as infants into a mortal family, and raised among the Aeshir, with the gift of a convincing mortal form. While on the material plane, their Aeshir vessels can store emotions, siphoning from those around them to better mimic and live amongst mortals for the first two decades of their life. Once an Avatar undergoes Ascension, those vessels disappear, and with it, they return to the servant of the Divine. Servants have no use for emotion.

History

The Ascension of Avatars began not long after their creation. Quickly their Creator realised they had no wish to deal with untrained and inexperienced Avatars and sent them to the mortal plane to be raised. They needed a few tweaks to fit in without being discovered, but it was only a few mortal lifetimes before the Creator was satisfied with the process.

Execution

There is no ritual or system for Ascension, merely exactly two decades from birth, an Avatar, and their form, will disappear from the mortal plane. While the Creator is typically one for dramatics maintaining such became bothersome, and now they just blink out of existence. As long as nothing has gone overtly wrong in an Avatar's upbringing, they should be well-aware of the Ascension and usually find themselves waiting for their 20th year in the temple they were born. Purely mortal superstition, by those few in the clergy who are aware of the process, but convenient nonetheless.

Participants

An Avatar's Ascension can be conducted entirely alone, however is usually attended by the mortal clergy that had a hand in raising the Avatar until that point. While Avatars can only experience the most basic of stolen emotions from those around them, the process is sometimes an emotional farewell. There is no guarantee an Avatar will ever return to the mortal realm, although it happens, occasionally. They live to serve the Gods however they deem fit, after all.
