Personal history

The vast empire of Long Gao rules much of the continent of Rokehara encompassing several nation sized provinces. Under its rule by the White Jade Emperor human-centric ideology has forced many non-humans into roles as second class citizens and in the case of the Hengeyokai (the animal people) into an unclean caste of sub-people. In Ice Dragon Province in the city of Yilen in one such slum where violence, crime and corruption run rampant against the Hengeyokai people Rha'sava the unlucky was born and left to die in a back ally orphaned by his parents.   Rha'sava grew up with many foster families among the Hengeyokai of Yelins slums many calling him cousin Rha'sava regardless of any actual relation. He also earned the nick name the unlucky, some say he was ill favored from the day he was born and many have observed his daily struggles with bad luck that seemed to defy logic. Rha'sava himself took his ill fortune in stride denying it to be luck and focusing on skill and training for success. To his credit he practiced hard and became proficient in an wide array of talents learning to be an effective merchant and earn an honest living, or as honest as a Nekogin can in the slums of Yelin city.   The unlucky Rha'sava would find his fates changing drastically after his best friend Manato (a kitsune whose family had fostered Rha'sava for a time) invited him to his younger sister Setsus sixteenth birthday. What was supposed to be a gathering of friends and family to celebrate Setsu becoming a woman in Kitsune culture was marred when city guards under the command of lord Teng and Captain Qian Rang barged in demanding fines and tribute for the "unlawful" celebration. The poor Kitsune family was unable to pay the cost of the fines and had no wish to endanger their family by fighting the armed guards. The two bullying guards smirked and said they would sell their daughter Setsu to lord Teng as a concubine to cover the fines. Manato raged and tried to say no only to be beaten unconscious by the corrupt guardsmen. Rha'sava watched powerless to fight back and something inside him broke. All his life he had struggled against misfortune and hardship, grown to appreciate that hard work and effort made him who he was. He also came to realize that the guards had been born lucky enough to be human in a human-centric nation, lucky enough to be granted tittle, position and power. What grew inside him was a hatred for the unfairness of luck, a need to see no to be Karma and hand deliver bad luck to those who had abused what the universe gave them.   As the guards dragged Setsu to a palanquin and locked her inside for transport Rha'sava slinked off playing up being coward as his mind raced with a plan, he couldn't risk his friends and family being blamed for the actions he was planning. Hastily he donned a set of dark grey leathers and a black leather mask that had once belonged to one of his foster parents who had taught him the arts of robbing wealthy homes. It was illegal for non-humans to own military weapons in Yelin but weapons improvised out of tools were always easy to find. With Kuni, Hanbo and an assortment of equipment he moved the roof tops and raced after the two guards and the palanquin where Setsu was locked away. The lessons of an unlucky life and surviving in the slums surprised even Rha'sava as the roof tops and shadows of the slums where the jungle, he the tiger and the corrupt guards a pair of dull witted cattle. He fell silent as a whisper of silk on the palanquin roof. His pounce took the rear guard off his feet and a sharp blow with the hanbo knocked him senseless. Rha'sava who had been no stranger to violence as much of his life had seen him forced to fight off thugs, bullies and feral animals felt time seem to slow as adrenaline and his feline instincts take over. The second guard had barely dropped the Palaquin handles and cleared his weapon from its sheathe before Rha'sava was on him.   When the dust settled Rha'sava stood alone in triumph, no he mused to himself under the mask not Rha'sava, but a cat in the night a shadow with claws, the incarnation of misfortune for the corrupt and cruel. He picked the locks on the Palanquin door freeing Setsu and robbing the guards telling her that her rescue was just a coincidence as he was a thief looking to score the fat purses of the guards. It was there under the dark moon that Rha'sava the unlucky gave birth to the legend of the Night Cat.   In the time that followed he would hone his skills and build resources and contacts as a merchant that would fund and fuel his campaign of vigilante justice. Those who prayed on the people of the slums were laid low robbed and their ill gotten gains filtered back to the community via his growing business as a merchant. In the years since he has become a myth whispered by the corrupt guards and cruel criminal alike under the command of the greedy captain Qian Rang and Lord Teng who secretly control organized crime in the city of Yelin. Among the poor and especially the Hengeyokai the Night Cat is no mere thief but an incarnation of justice, a defender of the innocent manifest from shadows and moonlight and a symbol of hope in a hopeless world.
