Temple of Light

We raise our hands to the sky,
And our voices to be heard,
To let our prayers fly,
Even higher than a bird,
To our mother and our father above,
Let us receive their love.
— Old hymn

The main religious building of the Children of the Light are called a lot of different things in different parts of the world but the most common, and the oldest, is Temple of Light. Stemming from the river houses in Depavata, the temples have over the years gotten to be quite different depending on where you are. There are however some distinct features that remain the same everywhere.

The Temple

Although simple enough from an architectural stand point, the temples can be very impressive. The buildings are often circular in shape, with just one big room inside. The roof is slanted with stained glass windows in all directions to capture the sun from all directions. In the middle of the roof is an opening to let the sun and the rain in, beneath it is a pool to collect the water.   The temple is often very much decorated with artwork, stained windows and mosaics. No matter how the specific temple deals with the rain water this system is always decorated as well, made to draw attention.   This main building usually stands for itself and it is here all ceremonies are held, both public and private ones. Close to the main temple however is usually several other buildings that belong to the temple and the priests, including hospitals, guest houses and sometimes homes for priests that aren't already from the town.

Variations

  • In Depavata, where the first temples where built, the collected water is lead through channels in the floor to the edges of the building where it is let out into the river below. This channels are open and often decorated.
  • In Kaeeche, where houses aren't built above water and where it doesn't rain as much, the water instead is collected in the pool and then left to pour slowly over a wall in the basement of the building before lastly being led away to go back to nature. This wall is made of very porous rock to let the water carve paths in it that the priests then use to interpret the will of the God.
  • In Zindakrim to the north water is a bit more scarce and they instead lead the running water to gardens outside the temple.
  • Axarsú, which together with Depavata is one of the older bases for the religion, build fantastic contraptions of glass in different colours that they let the water run through, with bells and other things to make beautiful music when the water runs through it.

The Temple often have a very central role in most settlements, both physically and socially. The Temple is often located close to the town center and a lot of activities are usually held by the priests and priestesses, not the mention the fact that they are also responsible for all care of the sick. The hospital is often located close to the temple for this reason.
