Shreya from Taranaphul

In the history of art in Depavata, no one makes a bigger impression than Shreya from Taranaphul. Her art singlehandedly brought on a whole new age in painting.
— Beginning of the book "Shreya's Heritage"

Shreya (a.k.a. Shreya from Taranaphul)

Life

The circumstances surrounding Shreya's birth is clouded in mystery. She was probably born in one of the villages close to the capital of Taranaphul early in the year of 154 and probably due to her vitiligo, something that was very unknown at the time, abandoned at the local temple. The priests gave her the name Shreya and sent her to the orphanage in Taranaphul.   Not much is known about her early life after this. As all orphans of the time she helped out in the temple and with everything the priests run in the city. She was sent to school for some years but didn't get any higher education.   At the age of 17 she was hired as the assistant of a carpenter that worked mostly on houses. It's here where she started painting, decorating the buildings and objects her master created. The name of the master has been forgotten through the years but she definitely played a huge role in Shreya's life and they were close until the master's death.   It was at the age of 24 that she made her first famous painting, known as "Line at Time", an abstract painting with a lot of colours. It was met with very divided opinions, as works of a new style often are. It did however catch the eye of a very rich couple at the court who offered to pay her living expenses if she would just keep painting. Shreya, who never had had much in life accepted this offer.   She stayed with the couple for five years, painting both commission work for them as well as her own work. Several of these paintings have lasted until modern days and can be viewed all around Depavata.   However, something happened and she had a falling out with the couple and they cut of her money. She famously cursed them loudly and told anyone who would listen that she didn't need them. She moved away from Taranaphul to a small village by the coast where she kept painting. It is here that she really developed her unique style of abstract and colourful landscapes.   It is also here she met her first husband. They got married and had two children during these years, who she apparently was a very loving but absent mother to. Her husband took care of them most of the time while she isolated herself in a small cabin by the sea to paint.   At 36 she suddenly moves back to Taranaphul and buys a small house in the poorer parts of town, not far from the orphanage where she grew up. Her husband and children apparently stayed by the coast. She took in several apprentices, and there were a lot of talk about how these young men and women were not only working for her. This talk just increased when she had a third child at the age of 39, something that nearly killed her. The child was quickly sent to her husband who apparently raised him as his own along with his two older siblings.   After this, Shreya stopped taking in new apprentices, keeping only a young woman by the name of Prachi, as an general assistant instead of apprentice. She always kept painting, and even though her paintings didn't get really famous until after her death, she made enough to support herself.

Legacy

While not very well known during her life time she was the first to move away from the realistic painting of the past. Together with her apprentices, who in much continued her work and style, she created a whole new way of seeing art. She is counted as one of the most influential artist of all time and is frequently studied in art history.
