Tritons

Tritons are an amphibious race that inhabits a bay to the north-east of Newhope. They seem inherently good and always fight evil when the chance presents itself, but also appear to be arrogant and assumptive. They made many claims about how they fought multiple great threats that could destroy the whole world but since no proof exists some people regard them as liars. However, races and individuals that manage to overlook Tritons' arrogant behaviour know well that they are a reliable, thoroughly good race of benevolent crusaders that think everyone deserves their protection. Tritons claim to come from far away, and that they ended up on Kontonyus just some centuries ago. There's evidence that might suggest this claim is right.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Tritons appear as humanoids with fishlike traits like fins and gills. Their hair and skin have colours like grey, green, blue, purple and everything in between.

Biological Traits

Though they live under the sea, Tritons don't like to live too far away from the coast. They can perfectly live on the surface and will travel on land if it helps their crusade against the evil. Of course, they belong to the sea and will come back there whenever possible.

Ecology and Habitats

Tritons live under the sea, in great lakes and similar places, but never too far away from a coast, since they still feel the need for land to be close.

Additional Information

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Tritons in Kontonyus claim to be just one tribe, and that many other Tritons can be found everywhere in Sunerda. However, as of today, Kontonyus' Tritons are the first to ever be witnessed by the races of the main continent.

Average Intelligence

Though Tritons are as intelligent as other races, their long stay in the oceans made them lose all knowledge of how to behave with other races. This means that, since they don't even know how to lie and how to be bad, they are oblivious to such behaviour in other races and naively accept everything others may tell them as the truth.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Tritons' male names always end with a vowel and a -s, while female names always end with an -n. Aside from that, Tritons have only a first name and use the name of their Tribe as a surname. Since the tribe located in Kontonyus is the only tribe known so far, all Tritons' surname is "Wazar".

Major Organizations

Tritons adopt a simple yet effective structure: there's no tribe leader and everyone can contribute to decisions. Their underwater city of Wazar hosts a big meeting room where every day many Tritons meet and make decisions. Every Triton has a role to fill in everyday activities and never postpones it, so only Tritons who have already finished their jobs take part to meetings. Since their organization is so easy and effective, they are puzzled by other races' organizations and always propose theirs as the best solution.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

The reason why pathfinders don't dismiss easily the claim that Tritons come from far away and are not indigenous to Kontonyus is that they have a language that strongly resembles other languages known on the main continent, especially from the southern part of it. That being said, the differences between their language and the continental ones are too significant to allow conversations.

Common Etiquette Rules

Since Tritons are a very unite race, never having disputes and such, they are puzzled by the divisions that races of the surface experience. The fact that some races have different factions battling each other mystifies them and they are fast to judge the others by how easily they turn to evil.

Culture and Cultural Heritage

Tritons perceive themselves as the defenders of the seas and claim to have fought many underwater threats before ending up stranded on Kontonyus. This might be the reason why they act in such an arrogant and haughty way, always expecting deep respect if not reverence from other races. Often their requests look more like orders than favours. Despite that, they seem to be truly good of heart and races like Lizardfolk who live close to them are used to their behaviours since they know Tritons are reliable and always speak true.

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

Tritons say that once they believed in a powerful god but later dropped their beliefs since they received no divine favour from it. As of today, they feel to superior to most of the other races so they don't accept teachings or advice easily. Nonetheless, some Tritons are fascinated by Goliaths' belief in Kord, the deity of storm and bad weather.

Common Taboos

Turning away from fighting an evil being is the worst thing that someone might do, according to Tritons.

Historical Figures

Tritons speak of a nameless Paladin as their major ancestor and first hero, though nothing more is known about him. Many pathfinders see some similarities between this character and the mythic figure of the Hero of the War of Guilds.

Common Myths and Legends

Tritons don't have myths and legends, since they call them memories. They say that once all Tritons lived together and fought a great danger, but ultimately failed and felt deeply sorry, so they decided to split and colonize many shores and fight evil threats that could arise from the seas. They claim to have a great enemy in a particular race: the dragonborns. Again, this seems to confirm their origin, since no other Kontonyus' race has ever seen a dragonborn.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Because of their arrogant behaviour, Tritons don't get along well with most of Kontonyus' races. Only the Lizardfolk seem to be able to stand Tritons.
Lifespan
Tritons mature at around 15 years and can live up to more than a century, sometimes even two centuries.
