The League of Unaffiliated Planets was formed during the First Contact Uprisings, when several of the planets fighting the Systems Alliance found that it was entirely hopeless to try and resist the Systems Alliance on military grounds. Banding together to pool their diplomatic resources, 12 of the planets signed a peace agreement with the Systems Alliance.
While several other planets have joined in the following years, the League of Unaffiliated Planets remains a comparatively backwards and underdeveloped faction. In the years of peace, the Unaffiliated has slowly increased trading with the Systems Alliance and there has been talks of a formal change of the original peace treaty to make relations with the Systems Alliance more amenable.
