Cartesian Cartels

Originating on Cartes V, the Cartesian Cartels are a vast group of loosely connected criminal organizations, using similar structures and methods. While they have no common goal, outside of profit, the Capos’ Council mediates the larger disputes between the cartel members, to keep them from falling into cartel wars, as has happened in the past.

Structure

The Cartesian Cartels consists of a multitude of smaller organizations but is dominated by nine Major Cartels, whose leaders sits on the Capos' Council.

History

The Cartes System was a small, but wealthy corner of space, with several spacefaring nations originating on Cartes V. As the numbers of people working and living in space grew, demand for illicit goods grew too and a rush for space-smuggling caused the local crime syndicates to infiltrate space programs, both state and private venues.
When a global economic crash caused national governments to give up on their space programs, the Cartels were about to lose the money they had invested in the programs. Rather than let the budding markets in orbit and with other stellar nations be lost to them, the cartels chose to take up the work themselves. This launched them from a planetary criminal syndicate to an interstellar one.
They used this as a stepping stone, soon infiltrating planets across the Systems Alliance, slowly starting to integrate other criminal organizations into their systems-spanning organization.
