Baladó Parrot (Ba-La-Doh Par-Uht)

Throughout the land of Steeghan, the Baladó Parrot is the most recognized and cherished bird. From a young age, the simple mention of the Baladó Parrot brought a sense of awe and astonishment and the promise of escapism and entertainment, since only a troubadour, actor or theater troupe can own this class of bird.

The name of the first troubadour who domesticated the first Baladó Parrot has been lost to the world forever, unlike Rogibo, the name of the first Parrot who had learned all the classics: the Apparition of the Singing Hall, Easternside Story, King Crowley and let us not forget Rogibo and Janibet.

With an average life span of thirty five cycles, a diet of grains, nuts, dried fruit and insects, the Baladó Parrot spends the first five years of its life being introduced to to all of the classical pieces of music and the most popular plays so it can learn long monologues and more impressively, can imitate most wind instruments and some percussion instrument. The right raconteur and the right parrot can transport a large crowd to a different time and place, the same as a large orchestra or the oldest, best trained theater troupe.

It was not long before the Consortium of the Arts took control of the breeding and sale of the Baladó Parrot. For hundreds of cycles the C.o.t.A. has sparingly approved the sale of these fascinating creatures. It is said that the price of such a creature is extremely high and only the most rich and notable of artists can adopt a parrot. This year, for the first time in fifteen cycles, there will be a lottery where forty five Baladó Parrots will be put up for adoption.

Because of its ability to mimic the human voice and tone, some believe that the Baladó Parrot is a sentient being that should be freed. Throughout the centuries, different religious and social groups have taken actions to fight against the plight of these animals. No matter how fierce the zeal, the words of famed philosopher Ermélius always calms the masses; "Not only housed with fresh food and water, add to that music, stories and companionship? We should all be lucky enough to suffer the plight of the poorest Baladó Parrot."
