Musket Frog

Basic Information

Anatomy

Most closely resembles the desert rain frog; they are incredibly round, and have surprisingly smooth skin. Their legs are of a standard length for jumping and swimming, and they are a sea foam green color. Though this sounds reasonable for a regular frog, the distinction between these and other species is their unique ability to fire out water similar to the Archer Crocodile. What they do is secret a special mucus in their mouths and stomachs that increases the surface tension of water, and creates balls of water with a film surrounding them. They can then spit these balls of water out, to knock down bugs and very small birds to eat. Because most of the room in their mouths is used to create these projectiles, they have much smaller tongues than is the standard for frogs.

Genetics and Reproduction

Gestation and reproduction is standard for the average temperate aquatic frog.

Growth Rate & Stages

Growth rate and life cycle stages are standard for the average temperate aquatic frog.

Ecology and Habitats

Musket frogs typically live near especially large bodies of water. While many frogs can make do with small ponds that may dry up in hot seasons, musket frogs will usually live in lakes or estuaries, as their only means of hunting relies directly on a consistent source of water. They are also found in swamps, though the high concentration of detritus can interfere with the creation of their projectiles, so it is less common.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Their diets are relatively standard, the distinguishing factor being their means of procuring food. They eat any insects or small enough birds that they can get, so long as they are small enough to a) be shot down by their projectiles and b) fit in their mouths.
