Three years have passed since the destruction of the 2. Death Star and Emperor Palpatine's death.
The last remaining forces of the Galactic Empire, that suffered severe losses during the battle of Jakku had to retreat into the outer rim terretories.
Meanwhile the victorious Rebel Alliance has established a New Republic, which is being joined by more and more star systems.
While the New Republic is enmeshed in political quarrels over the galaxy's future, the remaining imperial factions fight for supremacy among themselves.
