Great Rock

Great Rock is the prototypical "frontier town on the rise". For centuries it was merely an afterthought for anybody who didn't want to take on backbreaking work in the mines. Almost a century before the end of the Sith War some local entrepreneurs recognized an opportunity and converted the original facilities into a casino and other high end amenities.   Those changes helped put Great Rock on the map, but on Ord Mantell anywhere "on the map" ends up under the thumb of some crime organization or other. For Great Rock it was Gordo the Hutt who took over. He put significant effort into making the citizens of Great Rock more comfortable and amenable to his side projects. They all benefit from a share of mine and casino profits, but more obviously they have a rich local government infrastructure.   This free government, despite being beholden to Gordo, works tirelessly for the citizens of Great Rock and is rewarded with high approval ratings. It took several decades to perfect balance, but the symbiotic relationship between Gordo and the leadership of Great Rock is one model for how legitimate governments can best temper the worst demons of their criminal underbelly.

Infrastructure

Great Rock was built around the mining operations based here. The rich veins of ore that ran through the mountain attracted small corporations that were willing to squeeze every gram of profit from the mountain.   Almost everything centers around the mining operations that were abandoned as the edifice was carved out and the shafts moved deeper. The original headquarters and foreman houses were converted into a lavish casino about 100 years ago. Gordo the Hutt took over almost 20 years ago and has turned the area into a fledgling tourist attraction.

Architecture

As the name implies this city is built directly into the rockface of what would, otherwise, be considered a large mountain. The rockface provides cover from the harsh sun and tunnels wind throughout the entire edifice.   As you move further into the mountain structures become noticeably cheaper and flimsy. As mining operations clear out sections of the mountain the lower classes move into the newly cleared areas and a chain reaction of gentrification follows.
