Bone Gap
Demographics
Race
Bone Gap's population is largely human, though the odd halfling, hill dwarf, or wood elf has made Bone Gap their home.Class
Bone Gap's isolation and communal spirit keep the residents rather equal in terms of wealth, which is poor compared to other villages.Profession
Most here are fishermen, farmers, or herders. Families often have some members provide food while others produce crafts.Government
A village chief, advised and elected by the elders of the village, governs Bone Gap. A smaller council of elders works with the chief to maintain the village, though the chief directs their meetings and has the final say in matters.
Defences
Bone Gap has some defenses in addition to its stone wall- dogs are used to keep herds safe from predators and most adults have access to hunting bows and improvised weapons. However, the residents generally rely on their isolation to stay safe from dangerous beasts and marauders.
Industry & Trade
While most of the fishing, farming, and hunting is done for sustenance, crafts and leftover supplies may be traded along the Yahara River or sold to towns for gold, resources, and other goods- especially metals. Though those in Bone Gap lack wealth in terms of gold, their internal barter system lends to their economy, keeping the village alive.
Assets
Bone Gap's self-sufficiency allows its residents to live simply. The food, clothing, and lodging is quite basic, but no one goes hungry outside of drought and particularly harsh winters.
History
Bone Gap was settled long ago by a tribe of nomadic herders, whose numbers had swelled to a size that prompted them to settle. The land was rather low in the hills, with more fertile soil than the surrounding area, likely due to being a riverbed in the past before the Yahara changed its course.
Architecture
The buildings of Bone Gap are made of stone and/or cob, generally with thatched roofs, though yurts make up a decent proportion of the residences, particularly for farmers and herders. The docks extending into the river are the only structures made wholly of wood.
Geography
Bone Gap is one of the small villages located along the wide, slow Yahara River, which has a healthy population of fish. Though the surrounding heath is generally too acidic to farm, the founders of Bone Gap were lucky enough to have found a substantial patch of fertile soil, which is irrigated by the Yahara. A forest lies a day away, offering a source of wood.
Weather
The climate tends to be rather warm, with hot, dry summers and cool, damp winters.Natural Resources
The most prevalent natural resource is stone, with a supply of wood somewhat near to the village. Some of the surrounding grassland is poor for farming, but fine for grazing, with some farmers keeping cows, goats, sheep, or chickens. The river provides access to freshwater and fish, a staple in village life.
