Wyvar

Wyvar are one of the rarer species. Their lizardlike appearance was often met with hostility and fear throughout history, leading them to mostly isolate themselves from other species on their home island called the Nest. Wyvar are often descriped as "bipedal dragons" due to their similarities to dragons.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Wyvar typically have a wide frame and a strongly pronounced natural muscularity. Their skin is fully covered in scales, which are usually bronze, blue or red in color, but other colors can be seen as well. Wyvar have triangular faces with wide foreheads and narrow chins, as well as a protruding mouth and nose. They are born with tails, and they develop horns on their temples after birth. Wyvar have slit-like pupils and their eyes are typically colored shades of red, yellow and black. Wyvar have no hair on their bodies.

Female wyvar are stronger and taller than their male counterparts and are rarely born with wings, which are not strong enough to allow them to fly, but enables them to glide off of high places.

Wyvar do not shed their skin, but they grow new scales under their current ones, which push off the old scales once they have fully grown.

Genetics and Reproduction

Contrary to popular belief, wyvar do not lay eggs, but carry out live births. A wyvar pregnancy lasts around twelve months. Due to the dominant genes of female wyvar, newborn wyvar rarely share similarities to their fathers.

Wyvar are very rarely able to reproduce with humans and elves. The wyrmlings born this way have a vastly different anatomy depending on if they have a wyvar as the mother or as the father.

Growth Rate & Stages

Wyvar enter puberty in their early twenties, at which point they reach sexual maturity. Their bodies reach adulthood around their thirties. Wyvar do not age visibly, but their scales grow back softer the older they get. At around eighty years, they slowly start to lose scales on their chests, abdominal areas, the groin and the inside of their arms and legs.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Wyvar have an exceptional sense of smell and can track scents over several kilometers. Their eyes can adjust well to their surroundings and allow them to see in the dark.
