The Absolved

Any prisoner sentenced to death in the Braelin Empire may petition their lawmaster for the Right of Absolution by Combat. If the lawmaster approves this petition, the prisoner becomes one of the Absolved. 
The Absolved are taken to Golden Harbor to compete in The Tournament of Absolution that occurs every year.

History

Historically, prisoners sentenced to death in Braelor were executed by the lawmaker, unless those who were wronged by the guilty party petitioned to do the job themselves. Eventually, the Empire decided this practice was too rampant and decentralized, and thus, The Tournament of Absolution was born. The Tournament is dedicated to Tyr, the God of Justice, and most fighters seek the Maimed God's blessing. 
Every year, Absolved fighters are matched up in heats to fight one-on-one, with the winner advancing up the bracket until only two remain. The final fight is one of the most anticipated events of the summer in Goldenharbor. The winner is absolved of their crimes and set free.
