Latus Locus

Latus Locus is a small island off the Eastern coast of Patriam, nearest to Luna City. The island is largely unexplored and completely uninhabited by humans. Its climate is generally hotter and moister than the mainland, and the wildlife there is unlike much Patriam, having evolved in isolation for a long time. There have been several attempts to colonize the island, none successful. Luna City has tried twice to send settlers to the island, but they both fell through following large wildfires on the island shortly after the arrival of the settlers.

Geography

The island is actually two islands, separated down the middle by a shallow strait, but it is commonly referred to in the singular anyway. The western half is mostly a dense lowland jungle terrain with a brief beach around it. the eastern half is a large hill (or small mountain, depending on who you ask) which is similarly covered in jungle.

Fauna & Flora

One specific type of fauna that is only found naturally on that island is commonly called "Storm Ear". It is a broad leafed, low plant that turns purple and glows with bio-luminescence when barometric pressure reaches a certain point. Its scientific name is Meridiam Colocasia, and for the residents of towns on the western coast, it has the effect of predicting storms and hurricanes days in advance. Latus Locus has a diverse and plentiful array of animals including many creatures unique to the island. One notable animal includes the Bry Beetles, a large super/subterranean species of beetle that are highly intelligent and possibly even creative. The beetles have been known to build elaborate and intricate structures out of wood on the island and occasionally even take to the seas on rafts.

Natural Resources

Though expeditions to the island are infrequent, it has been discovered that the island does have very fertile soil. Its soil is so fertile that it is sometimes harvested from the island in high risk shipping operations to be sold and used by farmers around the mainland. The climate of the island combined with the soil would create a highly profitable, never ending crop season, this is exactly why the settlers from Luna City were trying to establish in their colonies, to no avail.
