Tihnareth
Tihnareth (pronounced "tin-NARR-eth") is the capital city of the Githyanki. It floats in the The Astral Plane, and is built on the body of a dead god, known only as "The One In The Void". The city is defended physically by walls, and magically by the Shield-Vesicle, a magical projection which blocks astral winds and provides a gravitational effect.
Tihnareth is generally considered to have two parts: Inner Tihnareth, which is inside the wall, and Outer Tihnareth, which is outside the wall. The neighborhoods of Tihnareth are as follows:
Inner Tihnareth
Greatwalk
A high-class district of Inner Tihnareth. From its high point, you can see the Dying Star of Evergreen Boughs.Heather's Rock
At the center of Heather's Rock is a compact garden, maintained by the Heatherguild - dozens of mages who work together to create a small bubble of artificial time, inside which plants can grow.Trade District
Inhabited largely by the merchants who sell their wares here. The Seat of Government
The two main attractions here are Castle Gith, where the royal family lives, and the Advisor's Tower, currently inhabited by Vlaakith LXXIV.Penfall
The body of Iuvith - one-time god of writing, knowledge, and eloquence - hovers over the center of Penfall. Many inhabitants of Tihnareth know someone who swears that their cousin's friend once dated someone whose sister was able to grasp a drop of falling god-matter, after which she became a great poet.High Street
The center of fashion in Inner Tihnareth.Seven Shades
The center of food in Inner Tihnareth. Named for the seven spirits who stand in the central square, arguing over the proper spicing of noodle soups.Breadford
A largely residential district, holding the rest of the population of Inner Tihnareth. Hundreds of years ago, wheat imports were brought in here, and the district still has several blocks of bakeries.Outer Districts
Ramus End
When the Shield-Vesicle grows weak, Ramus End is prone to periodic outbreaks of silence. The Pantomimer's Most Solemn Guild is centered here.Long-fore
When Tihnareth was first settled, Long-fore was close to a mind flayer colony. Even now, it has a sizeable population of astral raiders.Distal Docks
Astral raids often land their raid-ships here, carrying cargo from across the planes.Mesothray
Settlement on the spine of Mesothray is forbidden; it is set aside for magical research likely to end in explosions. Naturally, people who don't wish to be easily found have settled on the far end of Mesothray.Metathray
In Metathray, as in all of Tihnareth, gravity points "towards the ground". But the spine of Metathray curves upwards, and ends at a 90-degree angle - at the top of which, one can stand and look forward at the ground below. The behavior of objects thrown off the end of Metathray is difficult to predict, and the city watch takes a dim view of those who want to "just see what happens".Wide-fore
The smithing district of Tihnareth, where silver swords are forged.Coxa District
Most of the Coxa District is conical or cylindrical, and gravity points towards the central axis of the leg. The far end of the Coxa District is set aside for martial training in the unusual environment.Glassfall
When Tihnareth was first settled, glassmakers congregated in Breadford. When a gravitational failure caused hot glass to set fire to the district, Queen Zarryth declared that glassmaking was no longer legal within Inner Tihnareth. The glassmakers moved to the district now called Glassfall, and decorated the streets from central Breadford to central Glassfall in beautiful mosaics, as a form of artistic protest. Glassfall remains the most fashionable district in Outer Tihnareth.Pygostill District
Home to distilleries, bars, and the nightlife of Outer Tihnareth. The Long Walk
The boulevard that winds through The Long Walk from Children's Landing to the Pygostill District is decorated with trees that have been in stasis for thousands of years. The main streets are peaceful and calm, but the alleyways are rumored to be unsavory.Children's Landing
The teleportation circle where Githyanki creche-masters come and go, and the first part of Tihnareth that Githyanki youth see when they join Githyanki society after their childhood.Industry & Trade
The githyanki get most of their resources from other planes. Since no one on the Astral Plane gets hungry, or needs to eat, imports are not strictly necessary.
Geography
No one living knows what The One In The Void's name was, or how they (he? she? it?) was worshipped. It has been described like this:
Imagine a camel. Imagine that the camel has a rider on its back. Imagine that the camel has insectile legs, ending in points. Imagine that the camel's back has multiple spines, and no tail. Now imagine that this spined-insect-camel and its rider were both designed by someone who had never seen a camel or a human, but had once heard a drunk man describe them from the other side of the bar.
This is the physical shape of the One In The Void.
