A Brief History

The Sjonderwold is a place that is as much shaped by its mythology as its geography, and history blends seamlessly with myth. While accounts can vary from clan to clan and even from family to family, a few common threads unite most understandings of the Sjonderwold.

Folklore

Before the Sjonderwold, there was only heat and darkness and chaos and nothingness, and its name was Jormund. When the great god Aud All-Father arrived, they killed the chaos-wyrm Jormund and from its raw energy fashioned the Sjonderwold.   This act of creation gives features such as the Wyrmspine Mountain their names, and it is believed that all things in the Sjonderwold have a piece of this primal chaos inside of them which some claim to be the root of all evil and misfortune.   Aud's child, who followed after Aud from beyond and whom men call Einulf the Valorous, then took pieces of the newly-created Sjonderwold and created the living, thinking, peoples that live there: the giantfolk , the humanfolk, the elves, the dwarves , ogres, minotaur, centaur, gnomes, and kinter.   Once their creation was complete, the gods rested for a time, watching over and leading their creations in an era of peace, prosperity, unity, and enlightenment.

End of the Golden Era

Then calamity struck. The creations of the gods turned against one another with terrible violence, and the gods did not answer any pleas for aid or for shelter. The different peoples of the Sjonderwold fled to the safest corners they could find, and there defended themselves against any who would do them harm. New peoples were found, seemingly springing unbidden out of the earth and sea, and the Sjonderwold was rife with battle and bloodshed.

Pre-History

The ruler known as the Brightsword crowned themselves the first jarl and pushed all the non-humans to the fringes of the Sjonderwold, carving off as much of the land as they could for use by humans to grow and prosper.   After the Brightsword’s death, humans divided again, and their bastions slowly gave way to the non-human peoples of the Sjonderwold. It was during this time that the clans were formally organized. New gods, old history, and shared lands led to the formation of the six major clans: the Bear, the Dragon, the Elk, the Owl the Raven, and the Wolf.
