Kohlkand

Located on the broad plain between the low twin mountains of b'Tiin Kzat ("The Mighty in Repose"), Kohlkand is a wemic tent-town, unique in its relative permanency. That is, the town is always there, but its layout and population are constantly in flux. There are exactly two permanent structures built by the wemics, to house the envoys of the Falshwe and Sokomel nations, while an additional handful of human buildings stand nearby.   Kohlkand is busy trademoot and gathering place for all the wemic tribes west of Se'equinar. Though it is by no means centrally located, its site is an auspicious one from which to embark on pilgrimages to the holy ground of the wemics, and so it has grown into a place for the various tribes to meet on neutral ground, to trade, conduct politics, and compete. With the coming of humans to the upper Edonel Valley, a number of mercantile concerns have begun trading in Kohlkand, instead of trying to match the wemic custom of ever-changing, temporary trade fairs in the "wilderness" of the Grasslands. In addition, the wemics' sometime-allies, centaurs from beyond the Edonel Valley, come to Kohlkand to trade with wemics and humans alike, as well as to treat with the wemic nations' envoys regarding the shared holy ground of the two races.   b'Tiin Kzat lounge over Kohlkand, looking like nothing so much as two sleeping cats. (The wemics would say lions, but at least one seems to be curled up like a domestic cat, leading local humans to dub them "the Catnaps".) The western peak is host to a watchpost: a sturdy wooden tower, four stories tall, built on the highest point of the mountain. Its observation deck is 1500 feet above the surrounding plains, providing a nearly unobstructed view for miles. Next to the watchpost is a smaller structure housing Kohlkand's signal fire; the main, bonfire-sized blaze is ignited in times of trouble, while a smaller fire is maintained near-constantly to send smoke signals north to the tribes. Since the undead wars, the humans have maintained a garrison just downslope from the wemic tower, housed in a stone fortress that flanks and defends the narrow path to the summit. The watchpost was crucial during the wars, but the wemics are becoming dissatisfied with the continued human military presence in peacetime.   The eastern, slightly shorter peak possesses a shrine to certain wemic ancestor spirits between two of its summits. The shrine is tended by a wise old wemic hermit, and possesses a signal fire mostly only visible from the watchpost on the opposite peak. It is common for wemics planning a pilgrimage to first visit this shrine, to entreat the spirits for guidance and their favour.
