Athkos

Athkos is, like the suns of most normal worlds, a main sequence, G-class star. In spelljammer terms, it is a size H fire body. It is moderately active, with a solar cycle of 13 years or so. In terms of composition, magnetic fields, and behaviour, there is nothing to distinguish it from any of a million stars just like it.   Its native life, though, may. Although their true native status is debated, there are at least three distinct, major species living in the upper reaches of Athkos. They are commonly refered to as "angels", though they have no connection to extra-planar celestials, and it is likely that the Athkites, from whose traditions the names are drawn, would consider this blasphemy. The observed types are called "cherubim", "seraphim", and "ophanim", though there is some speculation that the three are actually different stages of life of a single species, or maybe a shapechanging species.   The cherubim are somewhat amorphous force envelopes (or something), containing collections of what look like large eyes to humanoids. The seraphim consist primarily of overlapping, semi-diaphanous shrouds, sails, or "wings". These wings might be made of the same material or force as the cherubim "envelopes". The ophanim looks like a ring of fire. Possibly they are a torus of the same "envelope" material constraining extra-hot solar material, or a living magnetic field. All three types vary greatly in size and behaviour. They have been observed to prey on each other, and on members of their own type, or gather in choirs of any number and composition. If they are intelligent, communication between them and the common races would be hugely difficult, and has not yet been recorded.   Some theorize that the angels arose due to interaction between defeated Euchtoi and the power and substance of Athkos' home sphere, in the aftermath of the Divine War. This would make them irredeemably corrupt in the eyes of many, but likely quite mortal. An accurate account of the angels' population is impossible, but there is every indication that they number in the millions, if not billions.   Circling Athkos within the orbit of Anndeir are a number of lizardfolk breeding ships. They tend to keep a low profile, only interacting with the gnomish station orbiting Anndeir for limited trade. While they remain wary of the gnomes' inventions (as is reasonable), they have been influenced by the gnomes and their groundside, Ditrokan connections to a more scientific mindset. They are interested in isolating the feature of so many suns that allows nearby lizardfolk to birth more-intelligent hatchlings, both to improve the process, and to allow eggs hatching in the depths of Wildspace the same benefits. Unfortunately, their most ambitious project to date, comparing the properties of Athkos and Xergoth, has resulted in worse than failure: the outpost orbiting Xergoth has cut all ties with the main breeding ships, and has descended into base piracy.
