The Day It All Changed

Molly Candrupa was a bubbly little child, she ran around a lot, told terrible jokes and collected shiny things. She loved collecting shiny things. It was this that caused her to change.   Her family had gone on a day out to the beach before Molly went to school. They’d been swimming and playing games all day when Molly’s parents decided to kick back and relax for a little bit. Molly was still full of energy, so decided to go and collect some shells to add to her collection. She grabbed her bag and went searching across the beach for the shiniest shells.   She had been roaming around the vicinity of her parents when she decided she would have to broaden her horizons and search over the bank. This was her mistake.   As she reached the top of the pile of sand dividing the two banks, she realised that the bank was deserted apart from a single man, who was stumbling towards the sea. A thought quickly crossed her mind that maybe approaching this man wasn’t such a good idea, but she quickly supressed it in her search for shells.   As she slid down the other side of the sand, she heard the man start muttering something. She couldn’t hear what it was, but after he said it he started shaking violently. She decided to stay away from the man as much as she could - her mother always told her to stay away from strangers.    The only thing stopping her from staying away was a large clam on the other side of the man. Her temptation got the best of her and she quickly scampered across his path and grabbed the shiniest shell she’d ever seen. This would be a great addition to her collection!   She watched the man for a few more minutes after admiring the shell. He’d grabbed a deck of cards out of his satchel and shuffled the cards. He closed his eyes for a few seconds before grabbing a card from the deck. His eyes went wide.   His hand suddenly went limp, dropping the card face up on the sand. His whole body soon followed and he fell to his knees. The wind had picked up since he’d drawn the card, but none of the cards appeared to be moving.   His skin began to crumble before Molly’s eyes, collapsing into a mound of ash, which blew far away into the wind. Molly started trembling and dropped her precious shell onto the ground. It shattered on impact.    She quickly ran over to the place where the man had vanished. The ground around where he was seemed to be slightly singed - the area was a mixture of sand and glass. The deck sat untouched where he’d dropped it, with the card he drew face up next to it.   The Void.   Molly shuddered upon reading the words emblazoned onto the card and realised that these cards must all have incredible power. She went to pick up the cards, afraid that anyone else who saw them would become hungry for power and do the unthinkable with them. Instead of picking them up, as she got close to them, they all floated into a pile and were encased into a wooden box with a brand imprinted on the lid: The Deck of Many Things.   Molly stuffed the box into her shell bag and ran as far as her legs would carry her. Her parents never saw her again, she didn’t want them to. She didn’t want anyone to be harmed by these cards as the man she saw was.
