Akali Empire
The Akali Empire (sometimes called the Akali Republic) was a large empire which covered the western coast of Katiin until it collapsed following a partially successful military coup (this event is generally used as the year zero in the West, as it marks an important and convenient moment in their history which all can agree on the date of). The Akali were a Pasan tribe from the north that were fleeing the spread of the Emisian religion, and settled in the large bay west of the Lintang (which they renamed the Akate; its earlier names have been lost).
Structure
Major decisions for the empire were made by a council of five chiefs. One was hereditary, while the other four were each chosen by one of the four guilds/castes (Warrior, Priest, Merchant, Farmer). The council directly controlled the Akate, as well as setting direction for the empire as a whole. Outside of the Akate, however, most decisions were made by the various provinces, which were generally some form of democracy or republic.
Disbandment
In an event generally used as the year zero on the west coast of Katiin, the leading general performed a coup and took control from the grand council into the hands of the Warrior caste. This inflamed long-festering tensions between native groups and the Akali, as what rights had been won the new regime attempted to take away, leading to the provinces rebelling en masse. The modern territory ruled by the inheritors of this coup is known as the Akateli Protectorate.
