League of Planets

"Peace is not maintained through timidity." - Samson Adelaja, 7th Consul of the League of Planets

Structure

The League of Planets is a federation of worlds, consisting of member worlds, colonies, and protectorates. Member worlds are accorded a degree of autonomy in internal matters, with defense and foreign relations entrusted to the federal government. Each member world sends representatives, known as delegates, to the General Assembly, the League's primary legislature. The General Assembly manages affairs such as commerce, taxation, and appropriations, with numerous committees formed to handle particular issues. Because of its growing size and power, the General Assembly has earned an reputation for corruption, bloat, and sluggishness.   The most powerful and influential worlds also send a special representative to sit on the Core Council. Acting as a de facto upper chamber to the General Assembly, the Core Council is responsible for defense, foreign policy, and crisis response. The deliberations made by this body carry considerable weight throughout the League, thanks in part to the weight lent to it from the League's most powerful members. Each member of the Core Council wields veto power over any legislation proposed within the body, intended to provide a level playing field. However, use of the veto has log-jammed the council in the past.   The General Assembly elects the Consul of the League of Planets to serve as the chief executive for the Consulate, the organ tasked with the implementation of League policy and the de facto head of the League, serving a five-year term. The traditional role of the consul was diplomatic, acting as the primary mediator between the leadership of the member worlds in the early years of the League. With time, though, the consul has amassed far-reaching power and influence.

Public Agenda

The League of Planets promotes what they call the Adelaja Doctrine:
  • The defense of League worlds through the pacification of threats outside League space.
  • The promotion of interstellar trade through safer, updated drill courses.
  • The advancement of civilized space through trade, settlement, and integration into the League to promote stability.

History

The League of Planets was founded in the early 32nd century in the far-off Aquila Sector as a mediator between emerging regional powers, in the model of the ancient United Nations. The League quickly coalesced into a formidable stellar union, expanding outwards from Aquila through diplomacy (classical and gunboat) in time coming to resemble the old Terran Mandate.   By 3188, League scouts had made first direct contact with the peoples of the Sierra, establishing an outpost on Jinshan not long afterwards. It was there that the League was made aware of a prosperous core world at the heart of the sector, one with unparalleled technological capabilities and wealth. In 3190, League settlers established a colony on Ningxia with the intent of restoring the agri-world to its former productivity. However, frictions with the natives sparked a rebellion, resulting in the Peacekeepers subjugating the Ningxians.   In 3192, an agreement as signed between the Magdalena Clique and the League, the Treaty of Presidio, formalized ties between the two powers. Included was the recognition of a forward League base in the Yoh-to system to monitor raiders. With the first Mictlano incursions into the sector beginning not long afterward, the base became critical in the defense of La Magdalena. War broke out between Mictlan and the League in 3196 over control of La Magdalena, resulting in a narrow victory for the League and its allies three years later.

Military

The League of Planets' armed forces consists of two branches: the Peacekeepersand the League of Planets Starfleet. Both organizations reflect the way the League developed from a diplomatic body into a stellar union in both nomenclature and structure. Although a formidable fighting force on paper, over-extension strains its cohesion and capacity. Both its strengths and limits are on full display in the Sierra: where the League is the single largest military power, yet lacks the capacity to decisively hold the entire system by force alone.
