Kujin Character in Shattered World | World Anvil

Kujin

Personality

Kujin is not what one would consider verbose. She speaks only when she has need of it, and when she does, her words are few. It's evident that her Arcassian isn't refined, and she carries the Frojien accent in her words. Although she, like the rest of the crew, uses the translators Sophia Lefsen provided to them, she quietly makes the effort to listen to the speaker rather than the translation software, and to speak in that language.   She is a very private person, however, and this shows when she speaks to other Frojien people--specifically Kyra. She will converse in the Frojien language with other Frojien people, usually out of earshot. When she speaks, she doesn't discuss much in the way of personal feelings to anyone, with the rare exception of Bijha, who she will occasionally express distant affection to, usually in the form of general praise, such as "Good," or "Well done."   In the same way, her facial expression changes rarely. She is typically very neutral, and it seems rather like she is frowning, though that isn't necessarily the case. She is a very serious person, and it takes some work to make her smile.   In a way, she is easy to ignore. In a crowded room, she remains quiet, and often sequesters herself from the crowd. In the same breath, she is hard to ignore. She is tall and lean, and wears her hair in a long braid that falls long and thin well beyond her lower back. Her eyes are red, and her features are severe--as is the aura she seems to have about her. In short, she is cold, methodical, and unpredictable.

Personal history

Kujin is a Frojien woman who has lived on many different shards, and regularly dwells among the crew of the V.S. Dusty Rust, and later the Morning Star. She was the first Frojien to leave the shard of Frojier, not by traditional transportation, but by the will of the gods.   As a young girl, Kujin lived and trained under the guidance of her father, who was a hunter. Her mother greeted them both when they would return from hunting, but custody was largely her father's. Because Frojien don't tend to marry save for in very rare cases, the three of them did not make up a family unit.   Her father was an accomplished hunter who lead his own hunting band. There were, however, some in his band who were not fond of his leadership style, and who were planning a coup of sorts. At the age of fourteen, while on a hunting expedition, Kujin overheard a group of hunters discussing their plans to murder her father and dismiss it as a casualty on the field--as often happened when encountering apex predators. When they discovered her, they reacted with deadly force, pouncing upon her with the intent to murder the child.   Kujin, however, was a very adept fighter, and she killed three of the men on her own before being overpowered. Then, her father arrived on the scene and retaliated against the men abusing his daughter. He killed five of them before he himself was overpowered, while Kujin fled the scene. It took days for she made it back to Hûile, but she was slower than the other surviving hunters. When she passed through the gates to Hûile, she was arrested for murder.   The surviving mutineers had accused Kujin of murder. They claimed she had killed her own father in his sleep, and eight other men mid-slumber before fleeing the scene. Though she was a child, a crime this grievous was cause for execution, so she was scheduled to be publicly executed at the Summit.   While in chains, in a cell awaiting the executioner to fetch her, the scarred and bruised young girl cried out for help. Nobody had believed her. Her own mother didn't believe her. Then, Aeslar, the God of Ice, appeared before her. He took pity on her, and took hold of her shoulder, then vanished in a puff of frost with her. She took her to the homes of her accusers and abusers, and there, she killed them for the part they played in the death of her father and her pending doom. When she was finished, she resigned herself to her punishment, and told Aeslar that she was ready to die.   Aeslar disagreed, and took her in a flash to the Farshard, and left her there. She learned to control Bïté to do more than forge weapons, but also to regulate her body temperature. She learned to survive in conditions far different from those she had already mastered. She communed with the Goddess of the Farshard--or rather, the Farshard itself; the Dumah. Her heart was still heavy with regret and anger. She wanted to combat all of the evil men and women in the world who would wrong or harm the innocent. Acknowledging her prayer, Aeslar appeared again and spoke with Kujin. There was corruption everywhere, but the Farshard had enough to balance out the corruption. He told her of Dagaea, of Dusterth, and of Arcassia, and from the three, she chose Arcassia, a shard which was colonizing and enslaving the inhabitants of other shards, growing too powerful too quickly.   Once there, she became a vigilante of sorts. She began hunting and executing drug lords, child abusers, slave traders, murderers, and more. She was thought of as a ghost of vengeance, appearing at once all white and all black, with burning red eyes. Eventually, she was apprehended and imprisoned in a high-security prison which boasted a clean record of no successful escapes.   Years later, Kujin was the first prisoner ever to break free of the prison, at a time when the first known Frojien to leave Frojier had arrived on Arcassia. Kyra, said Frojien, made a concerted effort to find Kujin, and Kujin in turn made it a point to carefully watch Kyra, knowing that the isolated lifestyle in Frojier could lead to the far more sinister Arcassia exploiting her. When they met in a distant farmland, they discussed plans to leave Arcassia along with a few Arcassians and Mingans who wanted to explore the shards without the oppressive Arcassian eye upon them. After assisting in a heist to stage the unwilling participation of the crew's leader, Kujin remained with these people as part of their crew.   They first visited the Symoran Isles for supplies and to trade for a larger, sturdier ship. After obtaining the V.S. Rusty, they set a heading for the Farshard at the behest of Kujin, who remained the quiet, skilled fighter aboard the ship, warding away pirates and other threats to their safe voyage. She wanted to return to the Farshard to live quietly once more, and put her vigilante years behind her. During their voyage, she tutored Kyra in more advanced practices with Bïté.   On their way to the Farshard, the ship was intercepted by a Dusterthian ship, and the crew was arrested. Because their interceptors seemed well-intentioned, the leader of the crew, Jane Adair, asked that they not attack, so Kujin stayed her blade. Allowing themselves to be arrested and peacefully questioned, they were eventually pardoned from their arrest and unwittingly brought into the complicated politics of the Dusterthian Civil War, and the ship they were arrested on set an emergency course for the Farshard. There, Kujin took her leave of the group to assist the Neivari people of the Farshard in fighting off the Children of the Dust--the organization that was invading the shard and that the Modern Republic who had initially arrested the crew were fighting against.   On the Farshard, Kujin met a child named Bijha whose tribe had been attacked. Kujin cared for her, as much as a battle-hardened fighter with little to no maternal instinct could, while combating violent attacks from the Children of the Dust. After a few months, she and fellow crew member Lake had Bijha join them on their journey.   Throughout their travels, Bijha stuck to Kujin like glue, despite the Frojien not being terribly verbose, taking on a somewhat maternal role with the child. After the ship was given back to them, they traveled to Dagaea, where Kujin found a renewed sense of vigil, learning of the Crimson Fury, Kori Aarsen, who had killed thousands in a senseless, terrible rampage. Kujin left the crew to pursue Kori, leaving Bjiha and all the others behind.   For three years, she followed and fought Kori, finding her to be a formidable opponent who nearly matched her both in strength and in combat prowess, but who had the advantage of the power of the God of Fire in her possession. Kujin had no choice but to combine forces with Keyna Aarsen, the vengeful daughter of Kori, and her non-combatant companion, Edenn, to take the tyrant down. This was met with draw after draw, and they only succeeded in subduing Kori when the crew of the V.S. Dusty Rust returned to Dagaea and assisted in a match against the Crimson Fury.   Deferring to Jane's command, Kujin and Keyna were both somewhat frustrated by the decision to spare Kori's life rather than execute her, though the decision was determined because of the binding command Kori issued to the God of Fire to burn everything and everyone should she die, and everyone's uncertainty as to whether that command would hold after her death.   Initially, Kori and Keyna were both jailed on the newly constructed Dusterthian-style brig on board the completely redesigned V.S. Dusty Rust. Keyna was released at first after Kujin echoed Edenn's attestment for her, though she didn't completely trust her either. Without the Godblade in hand, Kori was powerless to issue commands to the God of Fire, and Kujin was assigned to watch her at all times, having superior strength. She dutifully accepted the orders and occasionally came to blows with Kori, but refrained from killing her... much to her own displeasure.   When Jane unwittingly struck a deal with Lazenca that resulted in the eventual very public execution of Kori Aarsen back on Dagaea. Kujin was inwardly shocked by the decision, but ultimately in favor of it, though she had no love for the demon Lazenca after meeting her either. After that turmoil was sorted, Kujin remained with the crew of the V.S. Dusty rust. After that was resolved, the crew returned to the Farshard to visit the Neivari resettlements, where Bijha had gone to stay since Kujin's former departure. Bijha joined with the crew again shortly after, giving Kujin further reason to remain with the crew.   She remains with the crew today.
