Oblong Order

On Sharitarn the ultimate evil action is to mess with the Vortex, something most powerful involuntary immigrants are tempted to do. Invert the direction of the Vortex is the only way of go home, and some don't care if it is a goal very unlikely to be achieved. Or if any success is likely to bring destruction for the entire Universe of Sharitarn, possibly also affect other parts of the Multiverse.   Those selfish characters who would have every single person on Sharitarn destroyed in exchange for a ticket back to their home Universes are the reason why a Exclusion Law must exist.   The Oblong Order do not endorses those heinous villains. Nevertheless, you are likely to find some in their ranks who do.
The Oblong was originally a religious order, or heresy depending on who was speaking, created by individuals who had a genetic mutation that made their brains, and cranial shape, differ from others from their specie. Same mutation also gave them a number of new capacities, and costed them some others.       Not particularly important for the context, all that happened on a different Universe, long before the formation of planet Sharitarn activate the phenomenon know as Vortex.       Eventually some members of that secret order became iis on Sharitarn, and originated a movement against the control of Sharitarn by human mages. This movement failed, people behind it barely survived, and one of them was left alone as all others where dead or avoiding contact. Whit open confrontation are the table, this individuals was forced to obey the Exclusion Law.       Advanced technology was not the only advantage of the Oblong cultist over most other iis. His specie had overcome aging long before he encounter the Vortex, their intelligence had expanded vastly beyond the limits of human mind. Aside of That their natural powers where about as capable to affect physic reality as the spells of a mage, and their bodies had a huge resistance against spells. This particular individual was less concerned with feelings of humiliation and vengeance than worried about his sanity, if he has to stay indefinitely in a world ruled by short lived humanoids who for most practical purposes predicated technological stagnation.          Whit that in mind the Oblong Mentor decided to search for others in similar situation. Powerful individuals, immortal, timeless or with extremely long lives in front of them; isolated on Sharitarn, and suffering some fort of difficulty.       That was, ar first, like a peculiar group therapy. Most the individuals that fit the description came from Universes where magic is actually more common and more ostensible that it is on Sharitarn, the Vortex is more likely to bring only one or very few individuals from places like that. Not all can survive on Sharitarn, and among those who can not all showed interest in the offer. Those who did, agreed in share their power and knowledge in exchange for something.       What is that payment, varies from one individual to the next. Only the Mentor himself know the terms of all contracts, and only the Core Circle of the Oblong Order know the identity of more than a dozen members.       The Order Grew, despite its very demanding criteria for admission. Each member is at least in some aspects more powerful than an archmage, just for natural powers of his or her specie. No one of them has promised to commit suicide for the Order, but almost anything else is on the table. And in principle the ultimate objective of this organization is to help the members to live meaningful and rewarding existences on Sharitarn, achieving any personal goals they may have more easily and at lesser cost.       "In principle" I mean, because a significant portion of Core Circle members has in mind something else. They want nothing less than dethrone the Mage's Brotherhood as dominant global power and set new rules for Sharitarn.
