O'dundin: True Stripes

General Summary

O'dundin's fearsome beast form has been more kitten-like of late. In a search for answers, he enlisted Magwyn's help in booking passage home to Tír na nÓg. There his Uncle Faoláin revealed that they were not blood, but he raised him to repay a life debt. O'dundin explored the Hallow Wood nearby where his father disappeared. He was attacked by fae creatures and the spirit in his mother's protective pendant turned on him. The pendant suppressed his shapeshifter heritage so that he could be raised as an elf. It had been corrupted by the Insect Spirits, causing his recent performance issues. The whispers of the fae helped his uncle to piece together how he may find his parents, and he helped him to reforge his father's flaming sword. Additionally, he learned that his Uncle Vince may not be so magnanimous, as his gifted control rig may be the cause of his monstrous transformations.

Part One: Fashion Conscience

O'dundin's SIN was flagged as a criminal after the raid on Evo HQ, making international travel to an isolated island nation under a magical barrier even trickier. Luckily for him, Magwyn had the foresight to provide the perfect SIN for him. A real one from a Renraku citizen that wouldn't be needing it any longer. Magwyn was angry with Renraku after they bailed out of a deal with her, and so she tricked her contact, Mr. Tanaka, into thinking someone was out to kill him. She maneuvered him to a gene clinic she owns where he would change his entire genetic profile to go into hiding. Little did he know that he would be given the genetic code of O'dundin after Magwyn had acquired some of his DNA.   Meeting at a fashion show she sponsored, Magwyn told O'dundin that if he killed Mr. Tanaka, (Now going by Eamon Kennelly) he could have his SIN and all the privelages that came with it. Including the position of Renraku Ambassador to Tír na nÓg, which he was scheduled to visit in a week. She also wanted him to finalize the trade deal Kennelly had worked out with the Tír government for a large supply of orichalcum. The deal needed little more than a signature, but Magwyn wanted him to then convince the ship's crew to navigate to a port under her influence. She would handle it from there.   O'Dunin, Vola and Squid met with Kennelly in the men's room, and O'dundin instead warned him of the threat to his life. He recommended he give him his SIN and go into hiding. The mercy was short lived, as Kennely proceeded to slame his head against the mirror until he was bloody. Magwyn then appreaed in the restroom with them from thin air. Grabbing Kennely by the hair, she slammed his head into the sink several times until he stopped moving, looking O'dundin in the eye the whole time. Applying Kennely's blood to her lips, she warned O'dundin not to play games with her. She wanted that man dead, after he failed to satisfy her. She recommened O'dundin avoid leaving her unsatisfied in the future, before kissing him deeply, the blood of his doppleganger dripping between their lips.

Part Two: Echos in Silence

The voyage to Tír na nÓg was routine and uneventful, as was the meeting with Tír ambassadors as Magwyn had promised. With his companions, Grendel and Jenobli, they made their way to his Uncle Faoláin's forest workshop. Faoláin quickly put them to work assisting in chores around the shop and with his sheep flock. Eventually, the gruff Faoláin told O'dundin what he knew about O'dundin's condition.   Neither Faoláin nor Vince are O'dundin's real uncles. His father's name is Tuan: A treasure hunter who often traveled with shadowrunners and would visit Faoláin to forge magical equipment for him. He paid in orichalcum, so Faoláin was happy to keep his discretion. One day, a mana storm passed over Faoláin's home and the entities in the Hallow Wood descended upon them. With a flaming sword in his hand and his crew at his side, Tuan fended of the entities and Faoláin told him he owed him his life.   Years later, Tuan emerged from the Hollow Wood one night carrying his broken sword in one hand and an elf baby in the other. The sword had been twisted in some unnatural way, now resembling a crooked tree branch. Tuan gave them both to Faoláin, asking him to pay his debt by caring for the child. He gave him an amulet of protection as well, supposedly crafted by the boy's mother. Tuan promised to return, but after he ventured back into the dark, Faoláin never saw him again.   Faoláin had his suspicions, but didn't want to tell O'dundin more without confirmation. He sent him into the Hallow Wood where his father disapeared, knowing the magic of that place has memory. But first, they reforged his father's sword together, a weapon with the power to demand truth.   O'dundin and his companions took a boat through the Hallow Wood's river, a completely silent forest devoid of any life. After a time, they were surrounded by dark creatures in the shadows who laughed at them as they were attacked by a water spirit. It sank their boat and disturbed the light of the flaming sword, which only drew the shadow creatures closer. The water spirit focused on O'dundin and he summoned a fire spirit to aid him. Eventually, the runners won out and when the water spirit was banished, the shadow creatures retreated. The entire encounter, O'dundin heard a woman's voice speaking odd phrases.
Faoláin never met O'dundin's mother, nor learned her identity. But he managed to piece together some of his suspicions with what O'dundin had learned from the Hollow Wood's whispers. O'dundin is a shapeshifter. The amulet had suppressed his ability so that he could be secretly raised as an elf. Faoláin believed that this hex was done to protect the boy, although from what he could not begin to guess.   When O'Dundin took up his Unlce Vince's offer to see Seattle, Vince had gifted him a special Control Rig. Shapeshifters normally can't use cyberware at all, and while this one worked, it was the cause of O'dundin's transformations into a violent beast. The protective amulet was damaged when battling the toxic spirits at the New Day Environics plant in Double Exposure Part 2: Purity and the spirit within was corrupted by the mana fluctuations caused by the Insect Spirits. This had become the cause of O'dundin's recent... eh, performance issues.
The corrupted spirit had been echoing voices from the past, and one phrase it repeated was "just a mirage." Faoláin determined that this must refer to Tuan's companion who called herself Mirage. He suggested that if he wanted to find his parents, he seek her out among he shadowrunner networks.   O'dundin decided he did not trust his Uncle Vincent any longer nor the Control Rig he gifted him. He removed the Rig and, with the corrupted spirit banished, O'dundin could now embrace his true nature and, over time learn to control his bestial changes without interference.   They returned home to Seattle, directing the ship to the port Magwyn had specified. They chose not to stick around to see what Mawyn has planned. Grendel did manage to nick a decent supply of orichalcum for himself, leaving behind a subtle illusion spell to hide his theft until he was well out of harm and, hopefully suspicion.
