Fox on the Run

General Summary

A simple retrieval job turned into a chase through an high-rise apartment as the runners tried to catch a fox-shifter who had accidentally stolen the data while being pursued by Kodama Bakemono and his harem of vampires. The vampire lord was killed and the data was delivered to Magwyn. Impressed they survived her trap, she considered their debt paid. She handed the data to Ayakashi Bakemono, the brother of the Kodama. Ruh-roh.   The runners took a simple escort job. Get the paydata from the client and bring it to the drop point. They found the client dead, his essence drained by a nine-tailed fox-shifter. Using a scanner, they determined that she had the datachip they needed inside the collar that the contact had gifted her (probably not expecting to be eaten). They were interrupted by Kodama Bakemono and the numerous vampires behind them. They chased the fox while trying to outrun the vampires.   The collar had a feature the fox hadn’t expected: It was capable of opening tiny rifts into the Fire Plane, allowing her to fire a sunbeam at the vampires. The chase came to a stop when the runners decided to hold their ground against the onslaught of undead. Bakemono was eventually slain by Cat-Sith’s makeshift stake. His brood wailed tears of blood for their lost sire, which bought the runners time to escape out an elevator.   The vampires gave chase through the streets as they fled in their drone cab. A well-timed win by the Seattle Screamers in their Urban Brawl match meant there was a riot in the streets to give them cover from the vampires and the Lone Star response team that had been deployed. The frenzied vampires gained ground as the cab stopped to pick up an elderly passanger (despite the runner's objections) but Squid managed to hack the cab to jet away.   The drone GAuN-E-Cab brought them to their anonymous employer, who they now knew was Magwyn. She was joined by Kodama’s brother, Ayakashi Bakemono, who she gave the data chip to. She revealed not only his name but that the data chip contained medical records of many of Renraku’s 800 families. Ayakashi was annoyed that Magwyn was so free with this information, but she made it clear to him she was tired of his brood's failed vampire conspiracies and considered their relationship at an end.   The real job they were hired for was to be killed by the Bakemono brood, but Magwyn had wanted to see who would prove the stronger ally. The fox, who introduced herself as Holly, was the girlfriend of the client, John Xelas. He had expected to hand the data chip over to the vampires, but suspected a double cross. He put the data chip in the collar he had just gifted Holly and enchanted it with the Fire Rift to protect them. He didn’t expect her to eat him for unrelated (and yet unrevealed) reasons.
