Lemar Syndrome

Causes

Lemar Syndrome, also known as Rapid Aging Syndrome, is a condition that affects all Scylls that live into old age. Unlike many other species in the galaxy, Scyll mostly keep their physical and mental facilities intact well into old age. However, when these systems start falling apart, it creates a domino effect where the body and mind begin to deteriorate rapidly. This can happen as early as 85 standard years, and marks the end of a Scylls life.   Once the syndrome begins to take hold, there is no stopping it, only delaying the inevitable.

Symptoms

The symptoms of Lemar Syndrome vary widely, mostly depending on the Scyll's mental and physical condition beforehand. Doctors diagnose the Syndome by the numbers of the following symptoms displayed:
  • Rapid hair loss
  • Bone fragility
  • Arthritis
  • Loss of skin color
  • Rapid onset blindness/deafness
  • Loss of motor control
  • Loss of bowel control
  • Dementia
  • Mood swings
  • Paranoia
  • Visual/Auditory hallucinations

Cultural Reception

After a Scyll is formally diagnosed with Lemar Syndrome, funeral preparations begin immidiatly. A last will and testament is finalized from about a week to a month after diagnosis. After the will is sent to an attorney and checked, all property that the Scyll owns is transferred to the eldest child of the family, unless specified otherwise in the will. After all this is done, the afflicted Scyll is more or less legally dead. They stay in their homes most of the time, being tended by family members and/or doctors, and made comfortable until their time comes.
