Dwimora's Rock

Cover image No illustrator given - Scanned from a postcard issued by LJ Stagnetto - wikipedia
"After breaking free of the storm and once again finding suitably calm waters I find myself desperate for land more so than ever. I've perched myself atop the crow's nest (much to it's previous inhabitant's displeasure) and spend my time straining my eyes toward the horizon. I've been rewarded after a thankfully brief search as I can see the peak of Dwimora's Rock in the far distance"   -Jian Taishi, Three Hundred and Seventeenth Seeker of the Keeper’s Vault, 1649 C.C.

Purpose / Function

The mountains outcrop of Dwimora's Rock serves as a natural monument and point of interest along the northern coast of Faneshorn, as well as a fortification, trading post, and lighthouse.

Architecture

Dwimora's Rock is an enormous limestone promontory rising from the lowlands of the northern coast and facing the Gleaming Sea. It stands over 1,500 feet high at it's apex, with the seaward side a bare white cliff-face and it's landward side a steep incline covered in sparse coniferous woodlands. The dwarves of Karaz Dwerloch discovered and laid claim to the rock, tunneling into it to create a seaside fortress that also functions as a trading post and lighthouse for passing vessels.

History

First discovered by the dwarves of what would become Karaz Dwerloch during their exile from their previous home, Dwimora's Rock seemed at the time to be the continents very northern tip. It was immediately explored and claimed by the dwarves who began to mine it. Finding little of value they used the excavated stone to build the town of Sharuk at it's base which has developed into an influential seaside port for fishing, trade, and shipbuilding for the Dwerloch navy. As the town was founded in honor of their queen so to did the dwarves name the rock above them Dwimorak Aror after their goddess of law and civilization, translating literally to 'the stone of Dwimora', or Dwimora's Rock as we know it now.   The monolith has come under serious siege three times in it's long history. Firstly by the combined goblinoid and giant armies of Tarogog the Warbringer in the Age of Ancients, which sacked Sharuk completely and forced most of the dwarves out to sea, but were never able to oust them from their seaside fortress. A subsequent attempted invasion some years later by a collective of pirates from the Bulwark Isles was rather easily repelled. Lastly the Rock came under direct attack during the First Dragon War by Dragonhold forces, during which the full might of the dwarven siege weaponry proved a new and unassailable threat to the previously unflappably aggressive wyrms, though the fortification itself did sustain significant damage during the battles and is by historical accounts a shadow of its original glory.
