Kyndilheim

Some dwarves who fled the deep brought word and proof to the outside world of the incredible craftsmanship of dwarfkind. Such skill was sought by those of wealth or need. After Bjorn succeeded in solidifying the kingdom against invaders from the old roads, he found that outsiders from above had begun braving the dark passages to find the fabled crafters. To keep foreigners as distant as possible, yet allow for trade, he ordered the creation of a settlement close to the surface. Learning of the surface dwellers and their inability to see in the dark so prevalent in his kingdom, the new settlement was to be kept alight for them. Torches line the streets, and the luminescent moss is utilized heavily to provide light and fresh air to the surface dwellers. It is from this trait that Kyndilheim gets its’ name. Though some suggested having the settlement above ground, most dwarves dislike leaving the underground, feeling that it places them much too far from their true home of Myrkstein. As such, bazaar circles exist at every street crossing and are often busy with outlander traders. Though a few still venture into the depths to explore the exquisitely crafted towns, most prefer the well-lit trade town of Kyndilheim.

Government

Jarl Olaf has a vested interest in seeing the town prosper, given his family ties to many of the trading caravans. His ancestors once mined the depths for precious gems, but in present times they prefer the safer professions of trading and banking. Olaf’s rule over Kyndilheim is coupled with advice from the Cult of Kjarninn. To help combat the spread of surface dweller false religions, Bjorn established the rule that the Cult would weigh the will of Kjarninn in all official matters. Foreign priests are forbidden from preaching to dwarves. Punishment for doing so is a fine and exile from the realm. Beyond conveying the will of Kjarninn to the Jarl, the Steinjarl Avindr tends to allow most decisions to pass without interference.
