Orenburg
The capital city of Kamchatka, and the only known permanent settlement on the planet. Despite the harsh climate outside the city's borders, the city boasts an extensive vertical architecture, making the most of the space created by the great Pretech terraformers left behind by the Mandate.
The day to day of life in Orenburg is largely centered around the continued maintenance of the large terraforming machines at the four corners of the city. This includes the collection and refinement of the ore that the machines use as fuel, as well as the repair of what parts the residents can manage. What they can't, they improvise, and over the centuries of the silence the terraformers have become monsters of jury-rigged machinery and wire. Still, to this day they run, keeping the roiling sandstorms from swallowing the city hole.
Inside the city, almost a million people go about their day supporting the infrastructure that keeps their city alive. Ramshackle housing a dozen stories high are characteristic for the middling districts of the city, with the more well-to-do districts only barely having it better. Everywhere, dwellings and infrastructure are made of metal and stone salvaged from the wastes beyond the city.
Water filtration plants and greenhouses make up the most important infrastructure of the city, large districts of glass and metal dedicated to keeping the city fed and hydrated. The majority of the city's water comes from a large subterranean spring that is tapped conservatively to prevent its draining.
