Jump Space

Gray, that was all you could see for as far as you can see, and when you're floating in space, that's pretty far.   The crew learnt very quickly not to lose touch with the ship, lest they wish to be stuck in this never ending gray nightmare with a worsening itch. robots can be used in emergency, but don't get too attached, many don't make it back.   Of course where there's people there's a story and jump space is no less true, are the lights a signal from your ancestors? Does spending too long in jump really drive you mad? what of the tales of dark ships coming out of jump, with all the crew killed in gruesome manners or the crew left braindead at the controls still trying to pilot their non-functional ship?   Many lives have been lost in humanity's quest for speed but jump space seems like a necessary evil, who wants to spend 30-40 years of their life trying to travel to the nearest star, not us that's for sure, so we shall continue despite the risks until humanity finds a new level of fast.   And yet they didn't leave when it came around...

Geography

Possible the definition of void. Jump space is an endless plane of gray with nothing in it except you and your ship, occasionally a bright light will bloom like an explosion either alone, or quite rarely, in clusters, ship sensors only pick up the visible light, no heat or other radiation is picked up and the distance is uncertain.

Natural Resources

Occasionally ruined hulls or scrap will float past on your travels, much like the lights the distance is indeterminate and there are no signals coming from them, its best to leave them rather than attempt a recovery.
