Brekkonridge

Consisting of five separate islands that float around the continent of Sovis, Brekkonridge is considered to be one of the top repositories of arcane knowledge. Led by the Council of Mages which is headed up by the Archmage, the kingdom exists for no other purpose than to further the knowledge of magic in the world.   Founded by Cirin Stormbringer early in the 1st Age, the magic that keeps it aloft and controls where it goes has long been lost. Flying above the clouds, complex spells sustained in ways known only to the council maintain the illusion that the islands are still on the ground unless one were to look over the edge that is.   When the islands of Brekkonridge were initially uprooted, there was not much organization to the way it was done, he had simply taken his hometown and pulled as much as he could away from the earth at a time. Over time, however, the people of the city have managed to re-organize the islands to something more recognizable as a city.   1st Island:   Housing the Archmage and the Councilors, as well as the Council hall itself, the 1st Island of Brekkonridge is a marvel to see, the estates of the councillors are each meticulously tended to in a way that reflects their personalities. With the Council Hall standing in the center of the island, its grand structure holding within it vast stores of ancient scrolls and texts.     2nd Island:   Home to the Shadowguard and the battlemage training grounds, the second island is in stark contrast to the first. Gone are the luxurious gardens and the gentle slopes of the grass-covered lawns, replaced with the stark buildings and plain roads occasionally interrupted by open-air training arenas. With the Shadowguard acting as the elite police force protecting the five islands, their location on the second island gives them the best position to protect not only the Council but also the stores of food and other essentials kept on the island.   3rd Island:   The Brekkonridge College of Magic is the prominent feature of not only the third island but the entire Kingdom itself. The vast majority of the third island is encompassed by the college campus, with the remainder being reserved for the housing of the educational staff. Inside the college, the students can find several lecture halls, a variety of different lab environments ranging from cultivating herbs for potions to converting spells into single-use scrolls, and the ever-important null-magic rooms.     4th Island:   Possibly the most diverse of all the islands, the fourth island is used as the housing for students in the third class or higher, as well as holding the Brekkonridge market and the only gate that is used by the public. It is usually here that a new student begins their journey on the path of magic, whether it's as a child coming with their parents to the market or as a new student, stepping out of the gate as the first step to the fifth island.   5th Island:   Here we have the last and largest island of the string. The fifth island is responsible for the majority of the food consumed on the other four. Most of its space is used for farming, with a small amount proportionally going to the housing of the first 2 classes of students, and new student intake. Due to the extremely important nature of the island, the spells surrounding it are the most complex. Maintaining perfect growing weather year-round is merely the tip of the metaphorical iceberg, with a few of its other feats including, being invisible to outside viewing, only being accessible from two separate locations and even then only by a handful of people who know how to access it, and so forth an so on.       The Council of Mages   Generally considered the be the “ruling class” of Brekkonridge, the Council of Mages are comprised of an Archmage, the sitting head of the College, the heads of the Imbuing, and Summoning specializations, and the Leader of the Shadowguard with each of them also bringing forth the interests of other parts of the islands.     Councillor of Evocation   Gaining the position as the Sitting Head of the Brekkonridge College of Magic, he not only brings his expertise with the Evocation School of Magic but also represents the School and Faculty of the third Island. His responsibility is to bring their concerns before the council and ensure that they have all they might need to teach the next generation of magic users.     Councillor of Imbuement   The head of the Imbuement specialization of magic, they are the ones tasked with maintaining some of the spells that keep life comfortable on the five islands. They are also the representatives for the farmsteads on the fifth island, working with the other councillors to ensure that they have all the supplies they need for bountiful harvests.     Councillor of Summoning   Though one of the most controversial schools of magic, Brekkonridge is proof of its value. This position is held by the head of the specialization within the university. Representing the interests of the 4th island, they are directly in charge of the imports and exports of the five islands, as well as maintaining the public and private gates throughout.     Councillor of the Shadowguard   Not a Councilor in the traditional sense, this seat is held by the head of the Shadowguard, bringing forth the concerns and interests of the second island. They are responsible for ensuring that the islands have adequate security and that the laws are followed on all sides. The Councilor of the Shadowguard is the only person allowed to arrest other Council members.     Archmage The only seat that is appointed, and is a position for life. The Archmage represents the interests of Brekkonridge as a whole, they are appointed by the previous Archmage from anyone in the kingdom with a few restrictions. They are a master of all the schools of magic, and their path is one of Service. It is their responsibility to listen more than they speak for their word has the power to change the history of the kingdom. They have been handpicked following a series of values set down by Cirin Stormbringer at the creation of the Council.

History

Starting life as a small village in the northern parts of Hanajra, the land was eventually ripped from the ground by a grieved Cirin Stormbringer. While originally his goal was to pull as much of the village and surrounding land up at once, with the assistance of the first High Council of Magi they were able to eventually reform the kingdom into the five islands it's known for today as its drifts aimlessly over the lands of Sovis.
