Storm of Achrann
Shortly after the Cataclysm, a second moon appeared, named Badb, in the skies of Emain. Its orbit the planet erratically, changing its speed and direction of travel in an unpredictable fashion. As it travels, the area underneath it typically erupts in a storm of arcane energy. This energy can wreak tremendous destruction, killing anything it touches, but it can instead merely change that which it touches. Living creatures might spontaneously and drastically changed. Buildings could be warped into otherworldly shapes. Objects could be imbued with fearsome power. There are countless stories of other effects, strange and terrifying. One thing almost every intelligent creature can agree upon, avoid the Achrann at all costs.
Different cultures have developed a variety of methods of protecting themselves from the Achrann. The forest folk of Xihoudu discovered early that copses of the Hunan tree seemed to provide protection from the destructive effects of the storm. The Danakil retreated beneath the earth to escape the fearsome storms, and in their excavations discovered the mineral Mithril, which could harmlessly conduct the Achrann's effects away from populations in the open. More recently, the College of Wizardry developed the protective Bardha spell. This spell protected an area from the effects of the storm, and is commonly traded in the form of a stone that, when broken, protects an area for several hours. It is applied as a glyph to trading and transport vehicles of the wealthier companies.
