Hobgoblin

Hobgoblins are known to be the most intelligent race of Goblinoid.

Physiology

Hobgoblins are stocky and built strong, with a slightly hunched back, standing as tall as an average man. Much like other goblinkind, their faces are flat and wide, and they have large mouths filled with jagged teeth.   Their skin is red and quite rough to the touch, and their bodies are covered in sparse and bristly black hair, save for their heads, where their hair is black-brown and grows thick.

Society

Like other kinds of goblinoids, hobgoblins tend to live in tribal communities. These tribes are lead by the strongest, but also the most socially influential of their kind. Might makes right, but a strong arm means nothing if one leaves their back exposed. To live a long life, a chieftain must gather many loyal followers and forge fruitful alliances. A leader who lacks in authority or shows weakness is often quickly deposed.   Their society is distinctly militaristic, capable of working with more focus than goblins and more discipline than bugbears.   Hobgoblins regularly engage in raids and warfare to supplement their lifestyle of hunting and small-scale farming. The sea-roving hobgoblins of Mor Ughol are primarily reliant on spear fishing and raiding, but they also employ slaves for farming kelp and other stable crops. Their raids are quick and brutal, and a constant threat to all coastal communities of The Red Bay.

Culture

Hobgoblins are the only kind of goblinoid to meddle with the arcane arts, which they employ for warfare and spying. Many advanced inventions of warfare have been adopted by the Red Reavers in particular, such as crossbows and siege machinery.   They have also been known to produce works of art and architecture leagues more refined than their cousins.

Religion

Most hobgoblins worship Maglubiyet, the leader of Goblin pantheon and the god of war and leadership. The other gods of the pantheon have much more minor roles in hobgoblin society.   In the forests and wastes ruled by Ngorug's Host, an increasing number have also turned to the worship of Armok.   There are also those who eschew the natural gods of goblinkind, choosing to pay tribute to deities such as Bane or Umberlee instead.
