Rioskar

Salune is divided into twelve regions, each of which has one of five climates: the dry, the rocky, the humid, the floral, and the forest. The humid climates are abundant in rivers, and rain and mist fill the air: these are the Rioskar and the Tilu Reshi, or, translated to English, the Riverlands and the Outer Rim. These regions are home to a vast variety of creatures, but the most populous are the naiads.   The Rioskar specifically is warm and extremely humid, but this is where many Sal plants best thrive. Many plants in these regions feature conically folded leaves, so that rising steam provides water to one side and the falling rain provides water to the other. The water of a constantly moving cycle keeps all the plants lush and green. Drops of moisture seem to magnify the large, fragrant, brightly colored flowers. Most plants grow along the numerous rivers, making it easy for the naiads living in them to reach up and pick them. This is a common practice--naiads decorate their hair and bodies with flowers both in an out of the water. To an onlooker unfamiliar with the region, it would look as though flowers were floating just beneath the water's surface, but upon closer examination in the right angle of light, one can see the faint, watery hands dragging the flowers along, or the strands of curly hair twisted around them.   The lush ground is home not only to wild, beautiful plants, but to practical ones as well. Along the riverbanks, it never takes more than a five minutes walk to find a patch of buziesu. These plants grow in tall, flexible stalks. At around the four-foot mark, the buziesu begin to bend over with the weight of their pods, in a shape similar to a shepherd's staff (in fact, rude and rebellious youths sometimes use the word buziesu as a derogatory term for the hunched-over elderly). The pods are collected and ground between the rocks of the river to form a flour. This flour is mixed with water and then spread out over dry stones further from the river and baked over the fire (it is difficult to start a fire amidst the constant humidity, so there is only one fire that is kept burning constantly). The result is buzkat, a sweet, crunchy food with a similar texture to that of a cracker or tortilla chip. Buzkat is the base food of the Rioskar and the Tilu Reshi, because the dryness is refreshing against the eternal moisture. It is also the perfect food for scooping stews and sauces. The stalks of the buziesu are used for basket weaving, rope making, and more.   The lush, fertile Rioskar provides the perfect home for river-dwellers.
