Hanorum

"And I'll tell ya, almost no other plant has been so useful in the entire history of medicine."   "Really? None at all?"   "Fraid not. Hanorum is definitely the champ."   Medicana and Me, Episode 43

Basic Information

Anatomy

The Hanorum plant is easily identifiable by it's broad petalled purple flowers and jagged leaves.   Specimins can grow up to 1.5 m tall and have up to five blooming heads at any one time.   Each flower has between four and eight petals, all purple, and a cluster of black seeds at the centre.

Ecology and Habitats

Hanorum grows well in the sun and requires a metre diametre circle of space around it to grow to its full height.   It is hardy enough to grow in most soils, though it prefers perpetually damp and humid conditions.

Biological Cycle

Hanorum blooms in late spring through to early autumn, though the plant is perennial once it is established.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Hanorum is a multi-use plant, which has led to its cultivation worldwide. Different strains are grown for different uses, but those primary uses are:-   Flowers: The flowers and seeds of the Hanorum plant can be turned into a potent painkiller that lacks the soporific effect of many other painkillers. Throughout history it has been smoked and ingested, but injection allows for an amount of control to the area affected. If it is taken orally the entire body becomes numb, though this is the desired outcome by recreational users who say it feels as if their spirit can walk free of their heavy body.   Stalks: The fibrous stalks can be stripped down and turned in tough, versitile fibres. In ancient times, bandages would be made of Hanorum fibres. As both painkiller and bandage, it is easy to see why one of its nicknames is The Weaver's Cure-All.   Roots: Tubers grow on the roots of the Hanorum plant and can be cooked and eaten like any other root vegetable.
