Chimneys of Cepheus

Named for the adventurer-king who discovered them, Cepheus III, the Chimneys are a vast field of fumarolic ice towers produced by the emission of volcanic gases on the flanks of Mount Deneb. The frigid wastes of Cygnia are always well below the freezing point of water, and the diffuse degassing of carbon dioxide through the steaming warm ground around Mount Deneb causes ice to first melt, then vaporize, and then accumulate into chimney-like towers, through which carbon dioxide and water vapor continue to pump in great plumes.

In ancient times, the Emini people believed the Chimneys to be vents from the subterranean workshop of their engineer-god Gonazeg, and the formation was thus known as the Forge of Gonazeg. The name still predominates in some rural areas of the Duchy of Rokavut, though it is generally considered an affront to the memory of Cepheus III to use it.
